New England has created a football dynasty and although it’s early, this year’s team could be one of its best ever. Through three games, they have outscored opponents, 107-17, and have wins over the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, both AFC East rivals. Against the Jets, ageless wonder Tom Brady threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns. Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead each added a rushing touchdown. Michel was a major part of the game plan the last time the Patriots and Bills met. He carried the ball 18 times for 116 yards and one touchdown, as the team rushed for a combined 273 yards–the most in a game started by Brady.
While the Patriots offense has put up a slew of points, the defense might be the star of the season so far. New England is ranked first in the NFL in the three major statistical categories: total defense (199.0 YPG), passing (162.3 YPG) and rushing (36.7 YPG). Those numbers are incredible. Jamie Collins led the defense last week with seven tackles and two sacks, while Danny Shelton added six more. Devin McCourty and Collins rank first and third in the NFL with three and two sacks, respectively.
Only seven teams in the NFL are off to a 3-0 start and the Buffalo Bills are one of them. The Bills were down 14-0 against the Cincinnati Bengals last week but rallied back in the fourth quarter for a 21-17 win. Josh Allen completed 23 of 36 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown, and one interception to earn his fourth fourth-quarter comeback in just 14 starts. Frank Gore started off the 2019 season with just 20 yards against the Jets, but since then has recorded games of 68 and 76 yards with a touchdown in each. The Bills rank fifth in the NFL with an average of 151.3 YPG. Dawson Knox leads the team with 67 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, the Bills will face their toughest test of the season against Brady and the Patriots offense that ranks fifth in total offense (408.3 YPG) and second in passing (311.3 YPG). Jordan Poyer racked up 11 tackles against the Bengals, while Jordan Phillips and Kevin Johnson each notched a sack. Tre’Davious White was an integral part of Buffalo’s secondary, picking off Cincy quarterback Andy Dalton twice in the game. The team will be without defensive linemen Harrison Phillips, who tore a knee ligament on Sunday and was placed on IR for the remainder of the season..It is one of the more unlikely divisional showdowns for early season supremacy, but first place in the AFC East is at stake Sunday when the Patriots face the upstart Bills in a clash of 3-0 teams.

The Patriots continue to impress in the early part of the season and they still have not allowed a touchdown on defense. New England cruised to a 30-14 victory over the Jets last Sunday, with the score not reflecting the dominance the Patriots displayed. They gave up second-half touchdowns on a muffed punt and pick-six thrown by rookie backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham.
Buffalo, which has not started 4-0 since 2008, is arguably the biggest surprise 3-0 team in the AFC. The Bills completed their second fourth quarter comeback of the young season last Sunday, rallying past the Cincinnati Bengals 21-17. Buffalo is 1-5 against New England since 2016, but they’ll have a chance to close the gap on Sunday. Get ready for an AFC East battle as Buffalo and New England will face off at 1 p.m. ET at New Era Field. The Bills are cruising in on a three-game winning streak.
The Bills didn’t have too much breathing room in their contest with Cincinnati last week, but they still walked away with a 21-17 win. RB Frank Gore was the offensive standout of the game for the Bills, as he rushed for 76 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries. Buffalo’s victory came on an one-yard rush from Gore with only 1:54 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, New England won the last time they faced the Jets, and things went their way last week, too. New England strolled past the Jets with points to spare, taking the matchup 30-14. The win was familiar territory for the Patriots, who now have three in a row.
Their wins lifted both teams to an identical 3-0. A pair of defensive numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: The Bills enter the game having picked the ball four times, good for third in the the league. But New England is even better: they enter the contest having picked the ball six times, good for first in the the NFL. We’ll see if that edge gives the Patriots a route to victory. The New England Patriots have their work cut out for them this weekend as they travel west to play their AFC East rival the Buffalo Bills. Both teams are undefeated.
For the Pats, this will be their first real test. We know they’re good, the question now is how good. If they can dominate the Bills like they did the Steelers, Dolphins and Jets then the entire league is in trouble.
