The Plot: What is Conversations With Friends about?
The coming of age story explores friendship, lust, jealousy, passion, sexuality, and the unexpected complications of adulthood. As the title intends, it literally navigates through conversations with friends. But the thing is, these friends are messed up! The plot follows best friends and formal lovers, Bobbi and Frances, at Dublin University. Things get complicated when they start spending time with an older couple, journalist Melissa and actor Nick. As a result, Frances is forced to confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time.
The official synopsis of the movie teases everything that’s complicated:
“Though they broke up three years ago, Frances and Bobbi are virtually inseparable and perform spoken word poetry together in Dublin.
“It’s at one of their shows that they meet Melissa, an older writer, who is fascinated by the pair. Bobbi and Frances start to spend time with Melissa and her husband, Nick, a handsome but reserved actor.
“While Melissa and Bobbi flirt with each other openly, Nick and Frances embark on an intense, secret affair that is surprising to them both. Soon the affair begins to test the bond between Frances and Bobbi, forcing Frances to reconsider her sense of self, and the friendship she holds so dear.”
Who is in the cast of Conversations With Friends?
Conversation With Friends has done an excellent job with its casting! Newcomer Alison Oliver takes on the role of smart, cool-headed student Frances. Loki star Sasha Lane plays Bobbi, Frances’ former lover, and closest friend. Sex Education star Jemima Kirke plays Melissa, and finally, our London boy Joe Alwyn plays handsome but reserved actor Nick.
