A Little About Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley, also known as the King of Rock and Roll was an American singer and actor. He is regarded as one of the 20th century’s most influential icons. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style have met with both immense success and controversy.

Presley began his music career with Sun Records, working with producer Sam Phillips to promote the sound of African-American music to a larger audience. Presley, with lead guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black on rhythm acoustic guitar, was a pioneer of rockabilly, an up-tempo, backbeat-driven mix of country music and rhythm & blues. Drummer D. J. Fontana joined Presley’s classic quartet in 1955, completing the lineup.

RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who would manage him for more than two decades. Heartbreak Hotel, Presley’s debut RCA Victor record, was released in January 1956 and became a number-one hit in the United States. RCA would sell 10 million Elvis Presley singles in a year. He became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll after a string of successful network television performances and chart-topping singles. Hence, began his successful musical journey.

After being discharged from the military in 1960, Presley released his album, Elvis Is Back! The album, as described by music journalist, Greil Marcus, is full of Chicago blues, he said, “menace, driven by Presley’s own super-miked acoustic guitar, brilliant playing by Scotty Moore, and demonic sax work from Boots Randolph. Elvis’ singing wasn’t sexy, it was pornographic.” Released only days after the recording was complete, it reached number two on the album chart.

Around the same time, Parker pushed Presley to pursue his acting dream, but at one point his schedule was just simply overwhelming. Almost all his films were focused on formulaic, modestly budgeted musical comedies. Initially, Presley did insist on bagging higher roles but due to them failing commercially, he resorted to his generic role. In the first half of the decade, three of Presley’s soundtrack albums were ranked number one on the pop charts, and a few of his most popular songs came from his films, such as Can’t Help Falling in Love (1961) and Return to Sender (1962).

Elvis has had an extremely successful career, but his personal life at one point seemed to dwindle – starting with rumors of drug abuse and racial discrimination.

Elvis Plot and Teaser

It is clear the movie is going to be based on the singer’s life but we don’t know yet whether it’s about his journey to fame or after it.

Based on the teaser released, it looks like we will be getting an insight into his life after he embarked on his successful career, but nothing can be said yet.

Filmmaker Buz shared after the news of Butler being cast was announced, “I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right, and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist,” as quoted on glitzafrica.com.

Tom Hanks was confirmed to play Colonel Tom Parker and he himself confirmed shooting plans back in 2019, “That’ll be sometime next year,” he told the BBC. “My make-up man, Danny Striepeke, who did my make-up for I think, 17 films – had done Elvis on, among others, Viva Las Vegas… and Harum Sacrum and Kissing’ Cousins. So he had made some really lousy Elvis movies. He told me stories about both Elvis and also Colonel Parker. So I was a little bit hip to what that union was… that odd kinda like… Mephistophelian bargain.”

Baz said, as quoted on smoothradio.com, “Olivia is capable of manifesting the complex depth and presence that has made Priscilla Presley an icon in her own right. She’s an extremely talented young actor and the perfect counterpoint to Austin’s Elvis.”
