Space dramas are usually one of its kind. One of the most costly Netflix shows of all time is Away, a sci-fi thriller starring Hilary Swank. The show is said to cost $6 million every episode but it is definitely worth it. The American TV series has already created curiosity amongst fans.

The Hilary Swank space drama Away has been quietly gaining attention and admirers since its premiere on Netflix in early September. The narrative of the first crewed voyage to Mars feels ominously contemporary — especially in light of a current pandemic that has resulted in feelings of isolation and loneliness even among families — and Swank’s Emma, the leader of the three-year expedition to Mars, is at the center of Away. Emma is forced to leave behind her teenage daughter and her husband, who is suffering from medical troubles, in the show.

Fans are eagerly expecting Away Season 2

With season one concluding just as the group of familiar characters arrives safely on Mars, fans are already eagerly anticipating Away season two and what the future holds for Emma and her family. After all, Away distinguishes itself from other science fiction television dramas by functioning as a family drama.

Emma’s husband Matt (Josh Charles) had a stroke in the first episode, and towards the conclusion of the season, her second-in-command Ram (Ray Panthaki) admits to having emotions for her. It’s a lot, and the crew is only a few months into a three year journey.

Even though Netflix has yet to formally greenlight the crew’s next mission, a second season feels imminent with so much story still to explore. For the time being, here’s all we know about Away Season 2.

When will Away Season 2 release on Netflix?

Netflix is yet to renew Away Season 2. However, the possibility of it looks extremely thin and if reports are to be believed the series is not returning with Away Season 2 but even if it does, the space drama isn’t expected to launch until the end of 2022 or later. This is due in part to the continuing coronavirus pandemic, which makes it impossible for any production to return to work safely. Another fact of Away Season 2’s development that might cause a delay is the massive number of special effects required to create a genuine space experience.

These two aspects, especially when combined, mean that Away isn’t a program that can be recorded rapidly without losing its distinctive vibe. Still, the wait would be worthwhile, since executive producer Andrew Hinderaker has a multi-season strategy in place.

In an interview with The Cap Times, he shared, “The intention was always to start the first season and end the first season exactly how we did. But part of the reason the show is called Away is we were always interested in that journey, and what happens when they go home.”

Since the crew just landed on Mars, it sounds like Hindemaker is gearing up for Away to be around for quite some time, however there are no reports or official confirmation on Away Season 2 to back the facts.

Despite a slew of catastrophes on their way to Mars, including space blindness, a bad attack of mono, and a slew of water-related accidents, all five astronauts make it back to Earth alive. Because there isn’t really someplace for Emma, Ram, Misha (Mark Ivanir), Dr. Kwesi (Ato Essandoh), and Dr. Lu (Vivian Wu) to disappear to in space, if season two comes, they should all be back. More of Matt and his ongoing flirtation with Melissa (Monique Gabriela Curnen) may be expected, as well as the return of Matt and Emma’s daughter Lex (Talitha Bateman) and her adolescent antics.

It’s too early to speculate on new people, but showrunner Jessica Goldberg told Inverse that she’d want to explore the privatized space race in a hypothetical second season, which implies some new individuals will be introduced. The first season depicts a level of international collaboration that the globe hasn’t seen in years, and she’s well aware that the most exciting advances in space flight are being produced in the private sector.

What may happen in Away Season 2?

As aforementioned, if it at all happens, it’s fair to assume that the astronauts’ main aim in Away Season 2 will be to create a base on Mars. These five astronauts will spend more than a year on the planet before embarking on their lengthy journey home, giving them plenty of opportunity to develop a variety of interpersonal troubles. When Ram professed his emotions for the commander at the end of season one, the program created tension between Emma and Ram.

Panthaki is certain that this storyline is just beginning. In an interview with NME, he revealed, “He’s got this shield and it takes a huge amount to break that shield away. If you break it away, he’s going to give everything to that person. So it’s going to be interesting how it all plays out.” Meanwhile, back home, Emma’s husband Matt is also dealing with Melissa unexpectedly confessing her feelings to him. These two things combined could put even more of a strain on the couple’s long distance relationship.

Premises of the show

Away chronicles the Mars Joint Initiative, the first crewed mission to Mars. A Chinese scientist, a world-leading British botanist with no previous space experience, a Russian cosmonaut with the greatest space experience, an Indian medical officer who is second in command, and American commander Emma Green make up the crew. Emma’s husband trained as an astronaut alongside her and would have led the expedition if it hadn’t been for a medical issue.

The three-year expedition will take off from the Moon, but some crew members are skeptical of Emma’s ability to lead due to her response to a crisis scenario at the start of the trip.

“It’s about hope, humanity, and how, in the end, we need one another if we’re going to survive,” the series’ description says.
