Netflix has a massive library of its own when it comes to biographical documentary and they are working tirelessly to further expand it. Another addition to the list is the upcoming series, The Andy Warhol Diaries.

For those who don’t know who Andy Warhol is, here’s a little introduction of the artist. Andy Warhol was an eccentric artist, film director, and a producer. He was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art in 1950s. Warhol was very much into advertising and celebrity culture, painting, photography and silk-screening. His most famous silkscreen paintings are Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962) and Marilyn Diptych (1962).

The trailer gives us some glimpse of the movie as well as Andy’s personal life. The trailer’s voiceover called him to be a genius in everything included like art, films and fashion. He was undoubtedly an icon and created a style for himself. Andy’s secrecy and silence around his personal life made the audience crave more for the questions left unanswered. An unidentified woman can be seen saying that he’s not what he portrays in order to plan.

What is the basis of the documentary?

Warhol’s friend and collaborator, Pat Hackett, published Warhol’s accounts after he died. Starting from fall 1976 after he got shot, Warhol started talking to Hackett on phone every morning where Warhol will give a vivid and profound description of the events of the previous day. The last recorded conversation dated back to Feb. 17, 1987, five days before his death.  The events started from November 24, 1976 and concluded on Feb. 17, 1987, five days before his death. The documentary will be covering Warhol’s childhood in Pittsburgh to his impeccable work to his relationships with Jean-Michel Basquiat and others, to the attempt on his life in 1968.

Rob Lowe, Julian Schnabel, John Waters, Fab Five Freddy, Jerry Hall, Debbie Harry, and others have been included in the anticipated documentary is because they were the only people who knew Andy the best, if not inside out. Warhol was the best person to voice for the his own series, so his voice was recreated by an AI program, with permission from The Andy Warhol Foundation.

Netflix will release The Andy Warhol Diaries on March 9 during the usual 12:01 a.m. PT and 3:01 a.m. ET time slot. If you, too, are a fan of his silk screenings, and his sense of art and fashion, this documentary is a must-watch.
