It’s been around 3 months since Hulu’s cringe-comedy, PEN15 Season 2 was released. The show is extremely well-received among both audiences and critics. Everyone is looking forward to the announcement of the third installment of the show. Unfortunately, we don’t have good news for PEN15 Season 3, just yet.
PEN15 Season 1 premiered in February 2019. The series stars and is co-created by Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle along Sam Zvibleman. The show is set in the year 2000 and follows two middle schoolers. Maya and Anna lead the series as themselves in middle school. Though the actors around them are actual middle school-aged kids.
The story revolves around the frustration, awkwardness, and confusion a young teenager has to go through. The show has also been nominated for the Emmys and has quite a big fanbase. All of these call for a PEN15 Season 3.
PEN15 Season 3 Release Date
After the premiere of PEN15 Season 2 in December 2021, there has been no news regarding what’s next and whether we will get to see PEN15 Season 3.
At an FYC event in 2021, the writers of the show, Maya and Anna stated that they had planned the series with the aim of presenting three chapters to the audience – about one’s firsts, identity, and maturity. “It feels like we did it. For now,” Anna said.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources reported if Maya and Anna are ever to change their minds, Hulu is open to working on more seasons of the show.
It’s safe to say that PEN15 Season 3 isn’t outright canceled.
Until then you can stream both PEN15 Season 1 and Season 2 on Hulu.
What will happen in PEN15 Season 3?
PEN15 has tackled many situations that a 13-year-old can face. From unrequited crushes, wanting to be part of the cool group, rebellious phase, friendship clashes to serious traumas we have seen a lot.
Assuming we get a Season 3, with the characters still in 7th grade, there is still a lot one can explore in PEN15 Season 3, especially if you have witty writers like Maya and Anna on board.
Who can we expect to see in PEN15 Season 3?
The only cast members that are guaranteed to appear in PEN15 Season 3 are the lead actors Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle.
Along with them, we can expect to see the characters’ parents return for the third installment. Anna’s mother, Yuki, played by Anna’s real-life mother should reprise her role in the show. Maya’s divorced parents, played by Taylor Nichols (Curtis Kone) and Melora Walters (Kathy Kone), should also make appearances.
PEN15 Season 2 Recap
PEN15 Season 2 has dealt with quite serious issues thus far, despite being a comedy show.
In the season finale, titled “Home,” Maya’s boyfriend, Derrick who is in high school, emotionally abuses her. He taunts her for having no experience in physical intimacy and shames her for her “lack of experience” right when Maya thought she is about to experience her first kiss.
Later in the episode, Derrick proceeds to call Maya and asks her to turn on the radio, for her to listen to Santana’s (feat. Rob Thomas) Smooth, just to break up with her and asks her to remember the break up every time she listens to the song.
The episode ends with Anna coming to Maya to share the pain she’s going through. As a young teenager, one goes through a lot which is many times ignored by the adults as a child’s play. This leads to the child relying on their friends the most, making it their coping mechanism. The ending wasn’t the perfect happy ending one would want, but it definitely was a real ending. As of now, no one is sure about the fate of the show, but one thing is for sure, everyone is prepared for PEN15 Season 3 whenever Maya and Anna are ready.
