When was Cobra Kai officially renewed for a sixth season?

Cobra Kai Season 6: What are the top questions that must be answered?

Previously, Netflix renewed the upcoming seasons of Cobra Kai before the current seasons dropped on its platform. However, when it came to season 6, the wait seemed interminable long until the moment arrived. The announcement was made on Twitter, where the showrunners expressed their gratitude to the fans and guaranteed a big final season in order to close all loose ends. The statement made on Twitter reads:

“When Daniel LaRusso arrived in the Valley with his mother in 1984, little did he know that his life was about to be forever changed. The same went for three young kids from New Jersey who hadn’t yet met one another. Daniel’s journey from bullied teen to underdog hero became an indelible part of our childhoods and something that we would always carry with us in our hearts.

Reacquainting the world with The Karate Kid universe has been our humble honor. Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all the amazing original cast members. It has also enabled us to play sensei, expanding the original storylines and birthing a new generation of underdogs. We’ve never once taken this opportunity for granted.

Our day-one goal with Cobra Kai has always been to end it on our terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we’ve always imagined. So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement. The upcoming Season Six will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai.

While this may be a bittersweet day for the fandom, the Miyagiverse has never been stronger. This fandom is the BEST on the planet, and we hope to be telling more Karate Kid stories with you down the line. Because as we all know, Cobra Kai Never Dies.

In the meantime, strap in for the BIGGEST SEASON OF COBRA KAI YET. And let today be a celebration of all that’s come, as well as all that’s still left to be told. We couldn’t do it without you.

We made it.

Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy.

— Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg”

Be that as it may, people are still wondering why the renewal of the sixth season was delayed. We speculate the reason be the showrunners’ indulgence in another project, Obliterated, which occupied the latter half of 2022. Once the series wrapped up filming in November 2022 and the post-production concluded, they started working up on Cobra Kai.

In a conversation with Deadline, Hayden Schlossberg mentioned the possibility of a sixth season, saying:

“We have an end in mind. How many seasons it takes to get there, we don’t know. We’re enjoying making it so much. If it gets tiring to us, we’ll stop before that; we have a few more seasons already planned out.”

Interestingly, Hurwitz also pointed out in a Tweet on February 27th, that Netflix was not the one who decided to seal the fate of the show after six seasons; rather it was the creators’ decision. The Tweet read:

“Netflix didn’t tell us it was the last season. We told them it was the last season. We’ve always wanted to end Cobra Kai on our own terms and we are grateful we have the opportunity to do so. But that doesn’t mean we’re finished with the Miyagiverse. We love this world.”

What to expect from Cobra Kai season 6?

Previous seasons of Cobra Kai left us wondering what would happen after Terry Silver’s cheating antics are out in the open, which led to his arrest. With this, the future of Cobra Kai has been put into the dark since Kim Da-Eun has a 50% stake. She might use students from her dojos under the name of Cobra Kai.

In conversation with Digital Spy, actor Dallas Dupree Young talked about his heartbreak and being disappointed by Silver, saying:

“Kenny’s heartbroken. I mean, it was a gut-wrenching moment, honestly, because his father figure [Silver] is his leader, the guy that he looked up to, his mentor, kind of betrayed him in a sense.

“And for Kenny to watch that video and see the evidence, it was just very disheartening. So I think Kenny is in a rough headspace. He doesn’t really know where he wants to go at this point. But I can’t wait to see what happens with him.”

In addition to this, there is a possibility of a civil war looming in the Cobra Kai future that can be ignited by Mike Barnes if he leads Terry’s former students to combat the students of Kim Da-Eun. Season 6 will also observe the rise in power of Kreese now that he has escaped from prison. The only person that he will expectedly turn to is Kim Da-Eun, the granddaughter of his former master. On a different tangent, Johnny is having a baby with Carmen, and the due date has not been mentioned. This could affect Johnny’s attendance at the Sekai Takai.

Speaking to PopCulture, Bertrand had previously shared that he would like to see a world tournament in the final season, which would open the arena for new characters and locations.

He said, “I really want to go to the world tournament. I think the world tournament would be super interesting because right now, it’s just confined to The Valley of Karate, you know?

“I think it’d be really cool to introduce some crazy new players from all around the world. Yeah, and I’m sure Hawk can win at least a couple of fights.”

Recently, the executive producer of the show Jon Hurwitz tweeted that season 6 of Cobra Kai will begin one year after the second season finale. This points to the fact that everything from seasons 3, 4, and 5 took place within one year. Interesting!

Additionally, we expect the final season to underscore the international tournament, as Cobra Kai season 5 alluded to it throughout the end. Possibly, the sixth season will focus on Miyagi-do and Eagle Fang’s opportunity to take their students to a more prestigious platform.

It’s a little too early for the creators of the show to release an official Cobra Kai season 6 trailer. Be that as it may, Netflix has recently released a teaser video announcing the final season. What is the production status of Cobra Kai season 6?

As per the reports, the writers’ room was scheduled to open up in mid-February ’23. Additionally, people attending the ATL Comic Convention in late February ’23 reported that Ralph Macchio was “aiming” for a May ’23 production start. It was supposed to be filmed in Atlanta, Georgia in addition to certain locations outside of the US, as stated by showrunner Jon Hurwitz. Per Production Weekly, Cobra Kai season 6 would be filmed under the codename, THE ABORIST.

Be that as it may, the initial plan of filming between late Spring ’23 and late summer 2023, was disrupted owing to the WGA strike that began on May 1st. Speaking to Deadline on May 20th, the creators mentioned that the production was due to begin on the day the strike began.

Hurwitz said in a Tweet:

“We hate to strike, but if we must, we strike hard. Pencils down in the Cobra Kai writers room. No writers on set. These aren’t fun times, but it’s unfortunately necessary. The moment a fair deal is in place, we’ll get back to kicking ass. In the meantime, sending strength and support to the negotiating committee. You got this.”

When can we expect Cobra Kai season 6 to release on Netflix?

Cobra Kai Season 6: What are the top questions that must be answered?

Speaking to Deadline, the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai was all set to go into production in the late spring, which implicitly pointed to the filming process to begin in the second half of May, or even early June. However, as mentioned previously, the WGA strike has pushed the production start even further. Owing to the continuation of the strike, the release will also be eventually pushed further.

One of the brighter pictures of the show is that, unlike high-end fantasy shows, it does not require a long post-production process, owing to its short episodes and less VFX. If we take an educated guess, in 20 months, Cobra Kai has released three seasons, beginning with the release of season 3 in January 2021, followed by season 4 in December 2021, and finally, the fifth season in September 2022.

Since the streaming giant has renewed the sixth season after so long, we don’t expect it to hit the Netflix library in June 2023 or it to be released in ’23 at all. We can only expect the final season to hit its library in early 2024. We expect Cobra Kai season 6 to release by spring 2024.
