Blue Bloods Season 14.

With each new season, this police procedural drama has delivered amazing plotlines that have kept fans glued to their television screens since 2010, which isn’t just a minor accomplishment! Over the seasons, they have stayed true to their premise and continued to produce some of the best episodes, which have now become part of CBS’s original series legacy catalog. Despite all the success, there have been times when the series has faced some hurdles, and this time around, they are dealing with the same issues that all scripted shows across various competitor networks are facing, which is the lack of writers and actors due to the ongoing dual 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes!

Yes! It’s pretty much true that due to this situation, the production of the show has also been impacted and halted until a proper resolution has been reached with the parties involved. These uncertainties have caused one crucial question to linger in the minds of many fans: “Will the new season be the shortest one yet?” It is an important query that needs to be addressed as the possibility of it being a short season isn’t off the table! Especially when we consider that when the show was renewed, it was expected to have about 22 episodes with a runtime of 42 to 44 minutes, as it was intended to follow the same count to maintain the story’s flow.

Blue Bloods Season 14: Will it be the shortest season?

But the network is facing yet another hurdle that has completely overshadowed the cheerful 2023–24 fall schedule because of the ongoing 2023 SAG-AFTRA and 2023 WGA strikes! Major production houses across many networks have stopped until a proper agreement is made in their favor in terms of fair compensation for the writers and actors, which they truly deserve to have for their efforts in creating some of the most memorable series in recent times!  If these strikes don’t reach a resolution anytime soon, then many changes will soon be happening behind the scenes, with the first step being revising the standard 22-episode order being reduced to 12 to 15 episodes.

In order to compensate for the time lost due to production delays, which will help to avoid future extensive filming to meet the stranded episode count and release the series on time by next year, the next season might be the shortest one yet! To add more confirmation to this update, Warren Leight recently posted about the challenges of meeting deadlines on Twitter. He pointed out that the longer the writer’s and actors’ strikes go on, the less time studios will have to prepare for their 2024 schedule, quote, “Today many network dramas would have begun shooting their 4th episode of the fall season,” Warren Leight revealed on his social media handle.

“If the strike were somehow to end by Labor Day and shooting were to begin in early fall, the networks might be able to salvage a 13-episode season. The clock keeps ticking.” In a follow-up to a fan’s question, Leight asserted that a typical writers’ room would need at least five weeks to develop scripts before a show goes into production. However, he acknowledges that things may be sped up given the special circumstances. “Normally the writer’s room opens up 5 weeks before shooting begins,” he explained. “That could be condensed for a shorter season.”

In the end, if we consider the current state of the ongoing strikes, which regrettably have been at a standstill for more than 100 days, with many reports suggesting that things could extend well into October 2023, there is a significant likelihood that Blue Bloods will definitely be one of the shows impacted by this schedule and will be one of the shortest in its entire run since the 11th season, which only also had 16 episodes. Last but not least, until there is an official announcement made by verified sources, we’ll ask the readers to be patient and hope for the best outcome.

Blue Bloods Season 14 Release Date: When is it expected to return on CBS?

Even though the previously released 2023–24 fall schedule indicated that the new season would make its official return sometime around the fall season, September 2023 being the ideal release window with new episodes premiering every Friday at 10:00 p.m. on the CBS network, which was a great update for the viewers to get a heads-up! But sadly, the celebrations were short-lived, as since the early announcement, things seem to have taken a wide turn, which was quite unexpected!

With the emergence of the 2023 WGA strike, along with the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which started a while ago and doesn’t seem to end anytime soon, causing many Hollywood production houses to halt their work temporarily for the first time in 63 years, with reports circulating that the writing has not even started yet, which is quite unfortunate when we consider the fact that filming usually begins by the summer season if the network is aiming for its fall release later this year.

This makes any anticipation for the show’s official return in 2023 completely impossible, making the fandom wait for longer than they anticipated! So, if we look at the current status, one thing is noted: the network has also considered some crucial changes behind the scenes for its primetime schedule, just like ABC and NBC. These competing networks have also decided to shift the entirety of their fall schedule until next year, which will be ideal to avoid any further delays in production.

In conclusion, if the dual strikes don’t reach an agreement by late August 2023, then the network will be skipping the 2023–24 fall premiere and eventually modify and set the release window for some time around the midseason premiere of 2024, which can be a part for the first quarter of the next year (January–March), with a new update schedule to be confirmed by CBS in the coming weeks. It’s only a matter of time before the modified broadcast schedule becomes known to the viewers.

Moreover, a recent meeting between the WGA and the AMPTP at the Sherman Oaks office of the Carol Lombardini-led organization concluded with “mixed results,” according to a well-placed source. No details have yet to emerge as to whether the parties will meet for further talks or if more proposals will be offered. Sources are telling Deadline that the Writers Guild and AMPTP are resuming talks this afternoon. We’re told now that the meeting is in person. We understand that the WGA will be delivering their counter to AMPTP’s counter-proposal from Friday.

In conclusion, this puts an official stamp on this subject the series will not be a part of CBS’s  2023-24 fall broadcast schedule, and why it is being delayed until next year. In addition to this, the network recently released a revised lineup, in which Blue Bloods Classic Episodes have been mentioned to fill the void of the lack of shows that have been shifted. The episodes will air on Friday, September 29, 2023, as a bonus for the lack of Blue Bloods content. In the meantime, take a look at the official newly revised 2023-24 fall schedule below:

Blue Bloods Season 14 Plot: What to expect from the new season?

The show follows a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan is the New York Police Commissioner and heads both the police force and the Reagan Brood. He runs his department as diplomatically as he runs his family, even when dealing with the politics that plagued his unapologetically bold father, Henry, during his stint as Chief. A source of pride and concern for Frank is his eldest son, Danny, a seasoned detective, family man, and Iraq War vet who, on occasion, uses dubious tactics to solve cases with his partner, Detective Maria Baez.

The Reagan women in the family include Erin, a New York Assistant D.A. who also serves as the legal compass for her siblings and father, as well as a single parent to her teenage daughter, Nicky. Jamie is the youngest Reagan, a Harvard Law graduate, and the family’s “golden boy.” Unable to deny the family tradition, Jamie decided to give up a lucrative future in law and follow in the family’s footsteps as a cop. He’s found a friend and ally in Eddie, his female partner who keeps him on his toes and has very different reasons than the Reagans for joining the police force.

Blue Bloods Season 14: Will it be the shortest season?

To be very honest with you, right now, it is far too early to predict future storylines! But on the bright side, one thing is pretty certain the new season is likely to maintain the show’s core by picking up the plot from the finale episode, “Forgive Us Our Trespasses,” which followed Danny’s reunited with his old partner Jackie Curatola (Jennifer Esposito), now a Chief of Police with Suffolk County when they and Baez suspect a copycat killer of emulating previous murders. However, Dr. Walker is revealed to be back killing women under an alternate persona known as Jeremy.

He attacks Jackie at her home. But though she fights him off, he escapes before Danny and Baez can apprehend him. Meanwhile, Frank learns of a plan by Mayor Chase to put homeless people in handcuffs in order to get them into shelters.

They go back and forth over the plan, culminating in Chase blackmailing Frank after his detail is confronted by a homeless man. Archbishop Kearns scolds Chase before convincing the two to find common ground. Also, Jamie apprehends Tyler Green, a man who had committed criminal assault but was cut a deal by the DA’s office when he reverts to his old ways. He and Eddie work together with Erin to bring the man to justice once, and for all, and after the case is closed, Erin announces to the press that she has decided not to run for District Attorney after all.
