Began as an anthology series on Channel 4 in the UK for its initial two seasons, Black Mirror observed an ascending graph of popularity and critical acclaim once Netflix picked it up and produced three additional seasons, along with an interactive special.

Helmed by Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, who works with Netflix under the Brokes & Bones banner, the duo is popular for having produced Attack of the Hollywood Cliches!, Cat Burglar, and Death to 202X, apart from Black Mirror.

After facing an almost impenetrable streaming drought, Black Mirror is returning for a sixth season on Netflix. If this isn’t exciting enough to make your summers worthwhile, we don’t know what is. So, here’s everything we know so far about Black Mirror season 6 which is touted as “the most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected yet.”

When was Black Mirror renewed for a sixth season?

Black Mirror Season 6 Release Date Updates: Here is everything we know so far

Black Mirror was renewed for a sixth season in May 2022, as a result of a deal struck between the concerned stakeholders (whose skirmish has been detailed below). Additionally, Variety reported in May 2022 that season 6 was then in active-development. The report stated:

“It’s been almost three years since Season 5 of the dystopian drama premiered on the streaming service in June 2019, but sources indicate that a new anthology series of “Black Mirror” is shaping up, and casting is now underway.

While details about specific stories are being kept under lock and key, Variety understands that Season 6 will have more episodes than Season 5…

… A source close to the production tells Variety that the latest season is even more cinematic in scope, with each instalment being treated as an individual film. This is, of course, in line with recent seasons of “Black Mirror,” for which episodes usually exceeded 60 minutes and had incredibly high production values.”

The reason why the season renewal was pushed back was the ongoing disputes between Netflix with the IP owner, Endemol Shine Group. The dispute concerned the duo Annabel Jones and Charlie Brooker, who reportedly departed Endemol to start their own company. Following a period of non-activity, in July 2020, Netflix struck a deal with Brooker and Jones to have a stake in a new company, Broke & Bones. However, the problem pertained to the licence of Black Mirror which remained at the old company. This meant that any future season renewal would mean that the stakeholders would have to either licence it again for a new season or buy the rights.

Per the Deadline back in July 2020:

“Three sources said that Netflix and Endemol Shine have held talks about transferring the brand, but an agreement is still thought to be some way off. In the meantime, there is nothing stopping Brooker and Jones from bringing their distinctive style to other dystopian dramas, but they just won’t be badged as Black Mirror.”
