What is happening with Jennifer Sheridan’s character arc in the new season? Continue reading to find out.
If you’ve been watching the series, then we’re sure you’ve been curious about whether Kim Delaney will return to the show or not. This question has generated a lot of discussion on social media and in fan forums as the eleventh season has reached its 12th episode. Therefore, it is only fair that you receive all of the responses to the flaming queries.
If so, you’ve come to the right place. For you, we’ve put together a quick rundown of everything you need to know about the current situations surrounding the characters’ plotlines.
Here’s everything we know about whether Jennifer Sheridan may or may not be returning in Chicago Fire.
Will Severide’s mother return to Chicago Fire in Season 11?
Kim Delaney joined Season 6 of NBC’s Chicago Fire. She plays Jennifer Sheridan, the mother of Kelly Severide. Jennifer Sheridan is Benny Severide’s ex-wife and Kelly Severide’s mother. She’s Catholic and very religiously oriented. Delaney’s Jennifer Sheridan is also described as warm, scripture-quoting, and church-going. At one point she may have partied like it was 1979, but now it looks like she’s on the straight and narrow. If you ask her, she’s moved on from the past, namely her messy divorce from her ex-husband Benny, but old habits die very hard. If you have read some recent reports, longtime series regular Taylor Kinney is taking a leave of absence from his role as Lieutenant Kelly Severide to deal with a personal matter.
The production was notified of Kinney’s news on January 20, 2023, and given the unexpected turn of events, script rewrites will be required to account for why Severide is missing in action. Kinney’s departure date and duration are unknown at this time. But it seems that Severide will be missing for the remainder of Chicago Fire Season 11. It has been speculated that the character has already been confirmed as having been written out of any future episodes, though it is unclear why or when he will depart. The writers aren’t entirely writing a character out, as Severide will return, so they need a reason that’s serious enough to sideline him but simple enough to resolve when the character returns.
According to One Chicago Center, the writers could explore Severide’s family. He had a complicated relationship with his late father, Benny, and a volatile one with his mother, Jennifer. The latter was last seen talking to Severide on the day of his wedding, implying that things between them are currently fine. If Jennifer becomes ill or requires Severide’s assistance, we could see the character leave his 51 positions for a short time. It would be an efficient way to ensure he was out of town while remaining true to his character. Severide has always prioritized the people in his life that matter, so it would make sense that he would put his career on a brief hiatus to be with his family.
Additionally, it could even help the ongoing story between him and Kidd, which has been tumultuous in its own right. The couple was last seen arguing in the firehouse over their differing opinions, and Kidd even suggested that they shouldn’t work as closely together as they have. We know the couple is in emotional trouble, so perhaps some time away to reflect on what can be done better will be beneficial. Jennifer Sheridan has only appeared in four episodes of Chicago Fire over the years, but Kim Delaney has given the character such emotional depth that both Severide and the viewers have taken notice and make a storyline which reflects them together perfectly.
