Considering the reviews and responses the first season received from the audience and critics together, it took a few months for Netflix to renew it for the second season. On May 27, 2021, Firefly Lane was renewed for the second season. Not only did the renewal announcement come through social media platforms, but the actresses Katherine Heigel and Sarah Chalke also answered fans’ questions when they made the official announcement.

It was later announced that the second season of Firefly Lane will be released in two parts, with the first part released on Netflix on December 2, 2022. During Netflix’s Tudum event, Firefly Lane season 2 part 2 was announced to be released on June 8, 2023.

The news was confirmed by Katherine Heigl, who plays Tully Hart, as she shared the announcement through her official Twitter handle, writing, “And.. when you guys are done binging those new #Firefly Lane episodes…you can look forward to 7 more! Season 2 part 2 will be hitting your screens on June 8, 2023.”

Be that as it may, actress Katherine Heigl updated the fans on February 17th that the remaining episodes will be released earlier than expected. In a Tweet, she mentioned:

“Firefly Lane returns to Netflix on April 27! That’s right, our premiere got moved up so you can catch our fabulous retro hair sooner. So prepare to cancel all your plans and ignore your responsibilities until you finish binging the entire season!”

The official synopsis of Firefly Lane season 2 reads (courtesy of Netflix):

“What could possibly have ended the tight-knit thirty-year friendship of Tully and Kate, our “Firefly Lane Girls Forever”? We’ll learn the answer this season — but first — Kate grapples with the painful aftermath of Johnny’s ill-fated trip to Iraq, while Tully faces a lawsuit after walking away from her talk show, and must start her career over from the bottom. This leads her to search for answers about who she is and where she comes from — including a quest to find the father she never met, against the wishes of her secretive hippie mother, Cloud.

In the ’80s, we see Kate and Johnny first fall in love, creating more than a little drama in the newsroom where they work, as Tully’s career rises and she spars (and flirts!) with cocky sportscaster Danny Diaz. She just might have met her match — that is if they can stop arguing for five minutes. While in the ’70s, teenage Kate and Tully struggle to keep their friendship together as Cloud goes to jail for dealing drugs and Tully goes to live with her grandmother, far away from Firefly Lane. As the girls face the tumult of high school apart, they know the one thing they really need is each other.”

Part 1 concludes with Kate turning up at Tully’s apartment despite the former rejecting the latter’s attempts to make amends. Such an interesting turn of events occurs after Kate learns that she has been diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. However, she soon learns that Tully has left for a work trip in Antarctica. With so much happening between the duo, the fans are left to wonder whether this diagnosis will create a permanent rift between them.

Since the season is based on Hannah’s follow-up novel, Fly Away, we have some spoilers for you. In the novel, Kate learns that her cancer is terminal. When Tully is made aware of this news, she goes back home to Kate and they break the iciness between them before Kate passes away. The second part will presumably deal with the aftermath of Kate’s death more deeply.

Concerning the conjunction of the novel and the series, Sarah Chalke told Deadline, “Basically, the arc follows the storyline of the book, and then it also goes off into brand new directions as well. That was the plan to know how many episodes it was going to be done over so that the story could be told in its entirety. There was no waiting on finding out if there’s a pickup or not, and then [the story] is left halfway told, it was the completion of their journey.”

She further added:

“I don’t want to let anyone know where it’s going but it’s really moving, and it’s really emotional. I thought it was beautifully written, and it still has a real balance. Just like season one, part one, you’re still going into the ’70s, you still have the ’80s and ’90s. There’s moments of levity, humor and pain.

“It’s one of the parts that I loved so much about playing this role, and what I’m really gonna miss is — no two days were the same. There’s one day where you’re singing, dancing and running around in your nylons. And the next day you’re doing a really challenging scene in front of an elevator. With a mix of playing the 80s and the 90s, you can never open a script and go, ‘Oh, that’s something I’ve done before’.

“It’s gonna be really moving. Also so much humor and pain; it’s going to make you laugh, it’s going to make you cry. You are going to get answers to all of the questions that you’re left with. And I hope that you are going to love it.”
