The penultimate episode will definitely pick up the plot and set the tone for the viewers to get right back into the series where they left off last week with the premiere of Episode 6, Red in Tooth and Claw, released on May 26, 2022. The official synopsis of the episode states, “In 2006, Sophie pursues a far-fetched new theory about the night of Kathleen’s death; in 2017, Michael grapples with compromising his principles in exchange for his freedom.”
*Spoilers Ahead*
On the other hand, the official synopsis of The Staircase Episode 7 states, “In 2001, Kathleen prepares for a Christmas to remember. Years later, Sophie continues her quest to prove Michael’s innocence.” The episode is directed by Leigh Janiak and written by Emily Kaczmarek.
The viewers can expect the series to go further with the plot of Michael, whether he will accept the Alford Plea with reluctance or regret is a big question that needs to be answered. Many fans are speculating that he’ll start dating Sophie shortly after that due to glimpses of the scenes between them having the viewers intrigued that this may become a possibility.
Moreover, we know that Caitlin is adamant in her view that Michael murdered Kathleen. So, this will be very interesting to watch if the episode deals with this conflict and builds up the tension around this for the finale episode without stretching it further. On the other hand, many have just speculated that Todd and Clayton are to blame for Kathleen’s death.
However, it’s possible that this theory will be included and fans might turn out to be correct in the upcoming episode of The Staircase which will be cleared once the episode airs.

The Staircase Episode 6: A Quick Recap
The episode begins with Michael and Sophie running into Shaun again in 2017, just before Michael’s first day of the rest of his life, as Michael will be taking an Alford plea. Meanwhile, Sophie continues to research the matter as Michael remains in prison. The viewers see Sophie as she wonders if Kathleen’s tumble down the stairs was caused by an owl after she encounters the Petersons’ former neighbor. Michael learns in prison that he has lost his second appeal.
We can see that he is upset and doesn’t take the news well, and he argues with his lawyer David, believing that he could now spend the rest of his life in prison. Eventually, the viewers get to see that each of Michael’s children learns about the latest developments while at work. This will lead to the plot for the upcoming episode and expand more on some of the unanswered questions which the viewers are ready to be revealed soon.

After this, the show then jumps to the days leading up to Kathleen’s death, which is 17 days before she died. Shortly after that, the show returns to Michael’s time in prison. Sophie, Margaret, and Clayton pay a visit to Michael while he is incarcerated. Sophie tells that she has spoken with their former neighbor Larry and believes Kathleen’s death was caused by an owl. Instead of being a wild theory, Larry presents what looks to be a plausible explanation for Kathleen’s death caused by an owl.
Later in the episode, when Michael loses his cool in prison, he almost creates a riot. Sophie continues to battle for Michael, and she believes that with the new facts, such as owl fragments, the reason for Kathleen’s death will be investigated once more. Sophie is advised, however, that in order to do so, Kathleen’s body must be unearthed.
