The animated film Kpop Demon Hunters by Netflix has become the most-watched film in the history of the streaming platform, with 236 million views. With this, it has surpassed the record of the 2021 film, Red Notice, featuring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot. The latter was able to garner 230.9 million views.

Kpop Demon Hunters tells the story of a K-pop girl group who perform in almost sold-out crowds but also fight mythical monsters in secret. It was an instant hit after its release on June 20.

On that note, here’s what Netflix wrote on X regarding the drama’s success, “THEIR #1 ERA. With 236 million views, KPOP DEMON HUNTERS is OFFICIALLY the most popular Netflix film OF ALL TIME.”

In what happens to be a rare move for Netflix, the animated drama also received a limited cinema release last weekend. Unfortunately, the company hasn’t released any official box office figures. However, if sources are to be believed, the film has earned somewhere between $18 million and $20 million. This, once again, makes it the top-grossing film of the weekend.

Kpop Demon Hunters was directed by Chris Appelhans and Maggi Kang. The duo also co-wrote the script along with Hannah McMechan and Danya Jimenez. Meanwhile, the main characters for the drama were voiced by Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo.

The highlight is that the film’s soundtrack also broke multiple records, with tracks like Golden and Soda Pop topping charts worldwide. Earlier this month, Golden was able to secure the top spot on the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts. Two more songs, Soda Pop and My Idol, also secured their spots in the top 10 list.

Things couldn’t be better when reports also started circling around a possible sequel to the animated film. According to a recent report by The Guardian, Sony and Netflix are already in talks for the next installment of Kpop Demon Hunters. While no further details have been revealed, Maggie Kang did float some hopes for the sequel.

She also told Variety, “We’ve set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes.”

Nevertheless, those who have already watched the film are now eagerly waiting for the makers to reveal more details about its sequel soon.
