A Netflix Original supernatural thriller series, Lockwood & Co. is based upon the titular young adult novels written by Jonathan Stroud. Released on January 27, 2023, the anticipation of the fans for its sequel season is exponentially increasing owing to its positive reception and critical acclaim. Produced by Complete Fiction, here’s the official synopsis of Lockwood & Co. for the unversed:

“In London, where the most gifted teenage ghost-hunters venture nightly into perilous combat with deadly spirits, amidst the many corporate, adult-run agencies, one stands alone: independent of any commercial imperative or adult supervision – a tiny startup, run by two teenage boys and a newly arrived, supremely psychically gifted girl, a renegade trio destined to unravel a mystery that will change the course of history: Lockwood & Co.”

Touted as one of Netflix’s first significant new TV releases of 2023, Lockwood & Co. is developed by Joe Cornish, an 8-episode British series, which is often hailed as “teen Ghostbusters.” Hailing from the United Kingdom, the series has been critically acclaimed for its riveting storyline and enthralling characters. Boasting 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, 94% from audiences on RT, and 7.5 on IMDb, fans are anticipating a second-season renewal.

That being said, here’s everything you need to know about Lockwood & Co. Season 2 so far.

Has Netflix renewed Lockwood & Co. for a second season?

It’s been only a few weeks since Lockwood & Co. premiered on Netflix. It’s too early for the official streaming platform to renew or cancel the series. As you might probably be knowing that Netflix takes into consideration a litany of determining factors that eventually result in the renewal or cancellation of the series. These include viewership figures, completion rate, number of starters, production cost, and more. We can only know the ultimatum once the show has streamed for over a month on Netflix as then we can have some concrete data to deal with.

It’s also noteworthy that Netflix usually renews a new season within one or two months of the release of the previous season.

If you have an already expanded knowledge pool, then you might be aware of Netflix’s proclivity to canceling the genre shows that dealt with young adults, such as First Kill, Resident Evil, The Imperfects, The Midnight Club and The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself. These shows couldn’t make a cut, and all of them failed to get beyond season 1. The question is if Lockwood & Co. is belonging to the same genre, does that mean we won’t be seeing more of it in the future?

We speculate that Lockwood & Co. is leaning towards cancellation owing to its performance in comparison to other smash hits belonging to the same genre. Not only that, but its massive plummet in viewership from weeks 2 to 3 can’t be ignored especially when it comes to renewal or cancellation of the show. But if the show does get renewed, we predict that the second season will be the final one.

Be that as it may, the supernatural thriller series is harnessing a lot of critical acclaim. Take a look at a few of them below:

  • Rotten Tomatoes: 90% (critics), 94% (audience)
  • IMDb: 7.6/10

Speaking to Tamera Jones from Collider, Joe Cornish talks about the second season and whether or not, will the fans of the show be getting one. He said, “… I’m not going to get caught up in the whole, “Is there/isn’t there going to be a Season 2?” We drive ourselves crazy. We just have to be super proud of what we’ve done. We really appreciate the fact, particularly, that fans of the book are recognizing the world that was in their imagination up on the screen. I just want to be proud and happy for the actors, for all the incredible technicians, everybody who worked on the show that made it good, and that so many people dig it.”

Lockwood & Co. Season 2 Potential Release Date

Given that Season 1 just released last month and Season 2 is not yet officially greenlit, it’s too early to ask for a release date. However, if we were to guess, Lockwood & Co. Season 2 might release somewhere in mid to late 2024, if production starts in the next few months.

What is the overall performance of Lockwood & Co. on Netflix?

Based upon the weekly hourly data of the top-performing titles released by Netflix itself, Lockwood & Co is touted to be the sixth biggest title in terms of hours watched, garnering 25.12 hours between January 22nd and January 29th, that is in the first week of its release. When compared with other shows subsumed under the same genre, we can decipher that the supernatural thriller series harnessed a few more hours than The Imperfects, but unfortunately, a lot less than First Kill and Resident Evil.

In addition to this, based upon the CVE( that is taking the hours viewed and dividing the sum by the total length of the show), Lockwood & Co is reckoned to have a stronger start in comparison to two other British series, namely, Heartstopper and Half-Bad. According to Netflix’s Top 10 data site, sadly the show was tottering on the lower end for debuts of English series. As per the raw top 10s released by FlixPatrol, within the first three to four days of the show’s release, the show peaked however it has remained unsuccessful in maintaining that position, possibly owing to the influx of newer titles. Based on the given data, the show’s performance has garnered an international status. However, it’s more prominent in Asian territories such as India and Pakistan.

What to expect from Lockwood & Co. Season 2?

Lockwood & Co.: Release Date, Plot, Cast, Teaser, and Everything We Know So Far

*Spoiler alert*

As previously mentioned, the supernatural thriller is based on the five novels written by Jonathan Stroud. The first season which dropped on January 27th is based on the first novel in the series, The Screaming Staircase. Be that as it may, the creators of the show haven’t disclosed how many books will be covered in a single season as of yet. Be that as it may, it logically follows that if Joe Cornish’s series is renewed, the content will be based on the second or the third book of the series. That is, we’d likely see the fictional adaptation of The Hollow Boy and/or The Creeping Shadow, possibly leaving The Empty Grave for a future season.

In conversation with Deadline, Rachael Prior, Big Talk Head of Film and Kenton Allen, Big Talk CEO expressed the “great affinity” they share with the Lockwood books adding how it constitutes “distinct Britishness, innovative world building, vibrantly drawn characters and joyful command of the genre.” Additionally, they added how the TV series will be a “highly original, distinctively authored, ghost-detective show to enthrall audiences of all ages.”

Additionally, Digital Spy contends that the story arc of the second season depends a lot on how exactly Lockwood’s parents died, as the bits and pieces of the mystery are slowly unraveled throughout the course of the season. Season one of the supernatural thriller ended on a cliffhanger as the door to the room, which was locked throughout the season, swung open before the credits of the series started rolling.

In a conversation with Variety, when Ruby Stokes who plays Lucy Carlyle was asked what’s behind the door, she said, “I haven’t heard of any theories, but I have seen people, even some who have read the books, say they want to leave it up to interpretation. I haven’t read the theories either because even as I was reading the books, like going from Book One to Two, I enjoyed that moment of not knowing what’s next.”

Since season one was based on the first two books, we speculate that the third season follows the plotline of the third novel, The Hollow Boy. Here’s the official synopsis of the novel (courtesy of GoodReads):

“As a massive outbreak of supernatural Visitors baffles Scotland Yard and causes protests throughout London, Lockwood & Co. continue to demonstrate their effectiveness in exterminating spirits. Anthony Lockwood is dashing, George insightful, and Lucy dynamic, while the skull in the jar utters sardonic advice from the sidelines. There is a new spirit of openness in the team now that Lockwood has shared some of his childhood secrets, and Lucy is feeling more and more as if her true home is at Portland Row. It comes as a great shock, then, when Lockwood and George introduce her to an annoyingly perky and hyper-efficient new assistant, Holly Munro.”

Hinting about the chances of season 2 in conversation with Collider, Cornish addressed the arrival of future books (this can implicitly point to the arrival of a future season):

“The character relationships get more complex, the world-building expands, [there are] twists and turns, and it gets epic, and amazing set pieces. So, we would love to get the chance to put all that stuff on screen, but at the same time, we are very proud of the first season. If you want to find out what’s beyond that door and you can’t wait for more, then it’s in the books.”
