Directed by Louis Leterrier, Marcela Said, Ludovic Bernard, and Hugo Gelin, Lupin is based on the fictional gentleman, who is also a virtuoso in thievery and disguising, Arsène Lupin, created by Maurice Leblanc in the early 1990s. Created by George Kay and François Uzan, Lupin follows the life of a professional thief called Assane Diop, whose father was framed for the theft of an expensive diamond necklace by his authoritative boss, Hubert Pellegrini.

Unable to untangle himself from the mess he did not even create, he hanged himself in prison, which left Assane orphaned. With the advancement of time, Assane reads more about Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin and achieves mastery of thievery. However, his journey does not end there. He wants to avenge his father’s death from the Pellegrin family.

Season one of Lupin premiered on Netflix on January 8, 2021, which included primary filming locations in Paris, like La Naumachie pond at Parc Monceau and Musée Nissim de Camondo on rue de Monceau. The second season premiered just a few months later, on June 11. According to Netflix, the French show was successful in garnering 70 million viewings in just the first month of its release, which made it the most-watched non-English show on the streaming giant. Season 2 gained 54 million viewings which made it one of the biggest shows for the second quarter too.

No wonder why it has got another season!

With that said, here’s everything you need to know about Lupin Season 3.

When was Lupin officially confirmed for a third season?

Before Netflix confirmed part three renewal of this French thriller drama, the show’s lead, Omar Sy had already confirmed it through a tweet which he shared in May 2021. He tweeted:

“We can’t hide anything from you. Lupin part 3 is confirmed!”

Shortly before the season was renewed, Sy told Deadline, “The first bet that we won was to bring this character to life and to create a franchise. The franchise exists and now it’s up to Netflix to see what they want to do with it. We’ll see what they propose, but this is a character that is super enjoyable and who I would take great pleasure in revisiting tomorrow if I can.”

Towards the end of Lupin season 2, the audience catches a glimpse of investigators, with the collocation of prodigious evidence from Assane, can arrest Pellegrini and Dumont for their culpable crimes, including manipulating Babakar Diop for pilfering a necklace. By doing so, Assane has finally cleared his father’s name, but in this process, he finds himself in an even more difficult situation. Meanwhile, a manhunt materializes for him in France since he’s still wanted for his crimes. Not only that, he has been quite absent from his son’s life, Raoul.

Here’s the official synopsis of Lupin Season 3 (courtesy of Collider):

“Now in hiding, Assane must learn to live far from his wife and son. With the suffering they endure because of him, Assane can’t stand it any longer and decides to return to Paris to make them a crazy proposal: leave France and start a new life elsewhere. But the ghosts of the past are never far away, and an unexpected return will turn his plans upside down.”

In addition to that, while speaking to Metro, creator Kay commented upon the new trajectory that the story of the third season will take, in relation to its predecessors. There will emerge a new story, heralding a new set of characters and a new mission for Assane. He said, “‘It won’t be so focused on Babaker [Assane’s late father], even though he will remain an important, emotional crutch in his memory for Assane. It’ll be different stuff, and it won’t be so focused on Pellegrini.’

Additionally, the upcoming installment will certainly be inspired by Maurice Leblanc’s book series and all the thrilling talks of Arsene Lupin. Like always, Assane would use Lupin’s tricks from the stories to untangle himself from the mess.

Although Assane had his revenge in season 2, Pellegrini was not completely satiated. In conversation with EW, Sy told, “It depends on what’s gonna happen next for Pellegrini and everybody else, and even for him. Because it’s not completely finished. He’s done most of the work, but it’s not completely finished. When episode 10 finished, there’s still some questions that we didn’t have answered.”

Interestingly, Kay hinted at the possibility of a Sherlock Holmes and Lupin crossover, which actually happened in the source material. Speaking to Radio Times, he said, “Speaking really honestly, there have been [discussions].  There’s some ideas circling around that, that I have, that I’m really interested to explore.”

He further added, “The Arsène Lupin fanbase, which is evident within the show, would have to lock antlers with the Sherlock Holmes fanbase — you want to take it to a really meta level. Having that kind of level of fun would be really cool, and it’s not something we haven’t discussed.”

With the advancement of the plot, a lot of shows have turned darker and more violent. However, this won’t be the case with Lupin as Sy assured the show’s viewers. He said, “The whole show, we were very, very careful not to have our hero be violent. So there is no violence from Assane; he does what he does, but without the violence.

“One of the rules of Lupin is [he’s] never violent, never killed anyone. And we wanted in that moment for you to think, ‘Maybe he’s gonna do it.’ Because it’s a lot. It’s about his dad, and all these years waiting and having that moment with all this anger, maybe something’s gonna happen.”

He further added, “And maybe he’s gonna switch on the other side. And why not? That was really possible. But then having him coming back into himself, being smarter than that, and being able to control his anger — we wanted to have that moment and make the audience think that maybe he’s going to do it.” (via Digital Spy).

Talking about his enigmatic role and how he landed it, Sy told The Hollywood Reporter, “We were talking about making a show with Gaumont, the show’s producer, and they asked me: ‘What would be your dream role?’ And it didn’t take long for me to say Lupin.”

He further added, “It’s a classic book for us, he’s the guy, you know? And for an actor, he’s like the best toy you could get. Because you can do anything with him… It gave me the chance to do everything. I can be funny. There’s drama. There’s action. All with the same character.”
