Will there be a Season 5 of Magnum P.I.?
The CBS network canceled Magnum P.I. after four seasons as per many reports released on May 12, 2022. According to Deadline, the most well-known CBS show to be canceled this season is Magnum P.I. It was one of the most viewed broadcast series to be canceled this upfront season, as it is a Top 25 show in overall viewers. This came as a surprise and a shock for the fandom that the network abruptly decided to make this move even when the viewership and reception of the series were doing well for the network when compared to other televised series.
Fans of Magnum P.I. were left heartbroken when this announcement came, and they have given up all hope of the series being renewed by CBS after spending such a long time learning about these characters and their storyline. But recently released reports have also suggested a chance for this series to be saved for future seasons by other major tv networks.
On the other hand, there is another report by Deadline, which was published on June 2, 2022, approx 24 days after the cancelation of the series by CBS. The report suggests that there is a chance for Magnum P.I. to be revived and saved by NBC & USA Network for new episodes. This suggests that there are talks underway for the Jay Hernandez-led series to be picked up by USA Network and/or NBC, however, the specifics of a potential deal have yet to be negotiated and confirmed by these networks if the deal is completed.
Moreover, it is also suggested that another possibility is that the USA network will air seasons that originally aired on CBS, while NBC will air new episodes of Magnum P.I. for future releases on their platform. It should also be noted that other major TV series that have amassed large audiences and fans over time have been saved from cancellation by other television networks.
As these series have significant potential to generate profits for the network and deserve a second chance before being axed so soon. There are other examples of other major television series that were treated similarly but were able to be renewed and expanded for more seasons.
As mentioned by Deadline, after Fox canceled Brooklyn Nine-Nine after five seasons in 2018, NBC stepped in to preserve the Universal TV-produced show. Three more seasons of the cop comedy were broadcast on NBC. Last year, NBC canceled Manifest, and CBS’ All Rise was resurrected by OWN.
Why did CBS cancel Magnum P.I. Season 5?
It was surprising that such a large number of series were canceled, especially when other shows with lower ratings were able to be renewed by CBS this summer. This series had an average of 7.3 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating. There is no doubt that it is one of the best performing tv series for CBS, the decision was tough for the network to discontinue the series after four long seasons.
It was revealed that Magnum P.I. was canceled due to a lack of agreement between the two parties which are the CBS network and the lead studio Universal Television, over the license fee, as lower overall linear ratings have pushed down what networks are prepared to spend on shows. When a series is produced by a third-party studio, such as Magnum P.I., the problem has been exacerbated.
Moreover, the strength of CBS’ crop of drama pilots this season, which put more pressure on the hourlong bubble series, is also likely a factor in the decision to cancel Magnum P.I. Take a look at some fan’s reactions to this update as fans attempt to trend #SaveMagnumPI on Twitter.

What is Magnum P.I. based on?
According to the official series description released by NBC’s official website, it indicates that Magnum P.I. is a modern take on the classic series centering on Thomas Magnum, a decorated former Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator.
A charming rogue, an American hero, and a die-hard Detroit Tigers fan, Magnum lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business. The “majordomo” of the property is Juliet Higgins, a beautiful and commanding disavowed MI:6 agent whose second job is to keep Magnum in line, with the help of her two Dobermans.
When Magnum needs back-up on a job, he turns to his trusted buddies and fellow POW survivors, Theodore “TC” Calvin, a former Marine chopper pilot who runs Island Hoppers, a helicopter tour business, and Orville “Rick” Wright, a former Marine door-gunner-turned-impresario of Oahu’s coolest nightclub and the most connected man on the island.
Suspicious of Magnum’s casual attitude and presence at his crime scenes, Detective Gordon Katsumoto finds that he and Magnum are more alike than either of them cares to admit. One of Magnum’s biggest supporters is Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta, the unofficial “House Mom” and cultural curator of Robin’s Nest. With keys to a vintage Ferrari in one hand, aviator sunglasses in the other, and an Old Düsseldorf longneck chilling in the fridge, Thomas Magnum is back on the case!
What can be the plot of Magnum P.I. Season 5?
As of June 4, 2022, Magnum P.I. Season 4 has aired all the 20 episodes of the series which concluded on May 6, 2022. The final episode of the series, Close to Home, was directed by Bryan Spicer and written by Eric Guggenheim. It is estimated that the episode was viewed by 5.06 million US viewers.
The official synopsis of the episode states, “Magnum and Higgins are sent on a deadly mission inside a high-security correctional center when a ruthless criminal abducts Katsumoto and his ex-wife; T.C. rushes to help Rick when Suzy experiences serious pregnancy complications.” If the fifth season of the series is renewed by the NBC and USA Network.
The viewers can have a chance to see the story that may pick up from this very moment and expand more to probe the character dynamics and subplots which could have been valuable for the viewers to tune into watching the series for a long run. It will be great to see the story continue from the last episode and address some loopholes and subplots which the fans want to unfold further.
Moreover, we can’t predict what key details or surprises would have been revealed in subsequent seasons, or how the show would have ended because the season ended on a potential note which may lead to more interesting plots for these characters and the viewers to be intrigued with by tuning into watching more seasons.
