Is Shetland Season 8 happening? Read on to find out.

It might take you a while to register as to why you’re reading this article in the first place because a new season of Shetland without Jimmy Perez seems like an impossibility. But the BBC is making the impossible possible since the crime drama will soon become a reality. In conversation with the BBC, Henshall said, “I’ll miss him and the place. I wish everyone involved much luck with whatever happens next.”

Although not much has been revealed about season 8 as of yet, except that it’s happening, here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming season of Shetland.

When will Shetland season 8 be released?

According to RadioTimes, the filming of Shetland season 8 will kick off in spring 2023, along with the premiere of its episodes in the same year. However, the official streaming sources haven’t revealed the release date of the new season as of yet.

What is the official cast list of Shetland season 8?

As mentioned previously, this season will not be featuring Jimmy Perez. However, it does not end at that. According to RadioTimes, Mark Bonner’s character Duncan Hunter will also not return in the first episode of season 7 and the upcoming season. In addition to these two, we have also seen the last performance of public prosecutor Maggie Kean, whose role was also reprised by Annika Rose.

Apart from these, we expect the following cast members to return. However, BBC hasn’t revealed the official cast list as of yet:

● Alison O’Donnell as DS Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh
● Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson
● Lewis Howden as Sgt Billy McCabe
● Angus Miller as Donnie
● Conor McCarry as PC Alex Grant
● Anne Kidd as Cora McLean

Julie Graham is rumored to reprise the role of the public prosecutor Rhona Kelly. However, we are still in the dark regarding the casting roles of Lucianne McEvoy and Erin Armstrong.

No matter what, one thing we are sure about is that there will be a slew of guest appearances who will bring along with them new problems for the authorities to solve.

There is one problem, however, that remains to be solved.

Who will reprise the role played by Douglas Henshall?

Watching a Shetland season without Douglas Henshall does not conform to our expectations. BBC, however, has decided to go against the norms and welcome a new lead. Here’s what Henshall has to say about this new update to Radio Times magazine.

“It will be weird knowing they’re shooting the eighth series and I’m not there. I hope it works out and I wish them every success, but it isn’t going to be the show I was in. They will have to make a whole other show.”

On the other hand, Gaynor Holmes, the executive producer for BBC Drama, said, “We will miss him enormously but he leaves the show in rude health and we’re extremely excited about the plans we have for bringing more of this much-loved drama to audiences far and wide.”
