For your convenience, here is everything we know so far about Apple TV+ Silo Season 2.
Silo Season 2 Release Date: When is it expected to premiere on Apple TV+?
After much anticipation the popular science fiction dystopian drama television series, which was created by Graham Yost and based on the Wool series of novels by author Hugh Howey was renewed for a second season, which was confirmed by Apple TV+ on June 20, 2023, after it received positive reviews from critics, particularly for the world-building, production design, and Ferguson’s performance which has excited the fandom into knowing the future of the show!
After the renewal confirmation, the curiosity among the fans into knowing the release date of the show is quite understandable firstly we would like to note that the official release date for the second season has not been confirmed by the network. But production resource KFTV has recently reported that Silo Season 2 was already filming as of June 2023, despite the ongoing strikes on various networks which have stopped the production.
So, if Silo Season 2 follows a similar timeline, then we can expect it to arrive by early 2025—though it’s still unclear if the ongoing 2023 Writers Guild of America, which has been accompanied by 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, will or will not affect the series release window. The completion of the second season’s filming will certainly take a lot of time, as it is a VFX and set-heavy series! Hence, a 2025 release window seems ideal, but it still is subject to change and will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Silo Season 2 Production Status: Has it been stopped?
As stated above, the filming officially began in late June 2023 at Hoddesdon Studios, using the same set as season one, which is quite exciting as it seems like the production and completion of the scripts haven’t stopped or been put on hold because of the ongoing 2023 Writers Guild of America and 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes. All the necessary pre-production stages were in development and were completed beforehand, along with the first season, which is a great sign in itself that things might be moving rather smoothly compared to other shows on the streaming catalog.
So, if we consider this status, then it is not far-fetched to assume that the remaining six months will be preoccupied with filming as the series, which also requires other post-production requirements to be completed on time in order to deliver the best episodes to the fans. So, we speculate that the process might take some months, maybe not much more than the first season, as the world has already been established, but it will certainly take longer than usual when the scale of the show is considered!
Due to this, the release of the series can be delayed further, as there is no timestamp until when the strike is going to last, especially when the SAG-AFTRA strike has coincided with a Writers Guild of America strike as part of broader Hollywood labor disputes. Due to this, we would also like to highlight that there are some concerns that the actors might stop filming the series as per the rules of SAG-AFTRA. Right now, nothing has been confirmed, but we think behind-the-scenes talks about this might be pretty evident! Of course, this is just our best guess, and we’ll have to wait for any verification.
So, it this clear that the chances of the show’s return in 2024 seem very bleak at the moment. Moreover, in a recent interview, Rebecca Ferguson broke down the current status of Silo Season 2, quote:
“But I’m in it right now. We’re shooting [season 2], so I’m very excited.” Further adding, “Yes, of course. I’m producing it, and we had all of the script changes and everything prior to the strike so that we’re able to continue to do it, thanks to all of the preparations that we did. I’m full in. I’m soul, heart, and body in this project, and it’s really f—ing good. I think season 1 was very, very good, but it’s nothing compared to what we’re doing now. We’ve done the introduction. We know the characters. Now it can go dark. Now things can happen.”
Silo Season 2 Plot: What to expect?
Silo is the story of the last ten thousand people on earth, their mile-deep home protecting them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built, and anyone who tries to find out faces fatal consequences. Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer who seeks answers about a loved one’s murder and tumbles into a mystery that goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined, leading her to discover that if the lies don’t kill you, the truth will.
Since the series is based on the Wool series of novels by author Hugh Howey, the creators of the show have a lot of source material left for the series to continue for another season. The series, which started back in 2011 with the short story “Wool,” was later published together with four sequel novellas as a novel with the same name. Along with Wool, the series consists of Shift, Dust, three short stories, and Wool: The Graphic Novel.
So, it is certain that the creators will take the novels into consideration and incorporate plotlines from the beloved books to make the story captivating and not confuse the audience who haven’t read the novels! Moreover, Ferguson has promised a “darker” season 2. “I think season 1 was very, very good, but it’s nothing compared to what we’re doing now,” she told EW. “We’ve done the introduction. We know the characters. Now it can go dark. Now things can happen.”
The next season may also include elements from the second book, Shift, which is a prequel to the Wool arc and consists of books 6 through 8: Legacy, Order, and Pact. It is a prequel to the Wool arc. According to Google Books, “In a future less than fifty years away, the world is still as we know it. Time continues to tick by. The truth is that it is ticking away. A powerful few know what lies ahead. They are preparing for it. They are trying to protect us. They are setting us on a path from which we can never return.”
*Spoiler’s Alert*
Lastly, the story of the series will be expanded further from the first season’s finale, “Outside,” in which the viewers got to see that Juliette has Danny broadcast the outside footage to the whole Silo, but the broadcast is quickly shut down by Bernard. Paul is questioned by Robert on his condition; Paul later tells his wife that they are making an exception so he can be sheriff. Juliette escapes to Mechanical, where she talks to Martha before being arrested.
Bernard offers Juliette a deal: she will go out willingly in exchange for learning what happened to George and ensuring that Mechanical will not be punished. Bernard shows Juliette footage of how George was arrested and jumped off the stairs to avoid interrogation.
Bernard destroys the hard drive but later recovers the disc after Juliette mentions a door underneath the Silo. Bernard sentences Lukas to the mines. Juliette goes outside, and her helmet’s display shows the same video footage of a lush landscape. However, she later finds reality is the desolate view of screens. Because Martha has arranged for the heat tape on Juliette’s suit to be good quality, instead of dying there, Juliette is able to walk out of the crater that surrounds the camera and out of view of the residents.
The camera pans and zooms out, showing that surrounding the Silo’s crater are dozens of similar craters, each with a similar structure to the silo entrance. To get more context, check out the official statement of the showrunner Graham Yost who gave an insight into what the fans can expect from the second season, quote:
“We cannot wait for audiences around the world to immerse themselves in the epic world we have created to bring Hugh Howey’s novels to life,” said Yost. Further adding, “Apple has believed in our vision from day one and it’s an honor to have the opportunity to dig deeper into this story and peel back the layers to our characters in the Silo.”
“It has been enormously fulfilling to see the engrossing, atmospheric, and beautifully crafted sci-fi epic Silo quickly become Apple’s number one drama series,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “As audiences around the world have become gripped by the mysteries and conspiracies buried within this fascinating subterranean world, viewership only continues to climb, and we are so excited for more secrets of the silo to be revealed in season two.”
Silo Season 2 Cast: Who will and will not return?
There has been no confirmation, but we are certain that the main cast members will reprise their roles in the second season, which are as follows: Rebecca Ferguson as Juliette Nichols, Rashida Jones as Allison Becker, David Oyelowo as Holston Becker, Common as Robert Sims, Tim Robbins as Bernard Holland, Harriet Walter as Martha Walker, Avi Nash as Lukas Kyle, Rick Gomez as Patrick Kennedy, and Chinaza Uche as Paul Billings.

We would also like to emphasize that there can be some new characters introduced and some previous ones removed from the story, which, if it ever happens, will be revealed later by the show’s creators and crew.
The cast members who are expected to not return in the second season are still up for debate, as no confirmation has been made about this subject. But we are certain that the guest stars from the first season, who are still a big subject to change, might not appear in the second season. They are as follows:

The series is executive produced by Yost, Howey, and Ferguson, alongside Academy Award nominee Morten Tyldum (“Defending Jacob,” “The Imitation Game”), who also directs the first three episodes, Nina Jack, Fred Golan, Rémi Aubuchon, and Ingrid Escajeda.
Silo Season 2 Episode Count: Where to stream?
The exact episode count can differ, as the network might go ahead and agree to make the next season supersized due to the volume of the book’s plot. So, at this point, anything can happen, but on the bright side, we are certain that the new season will try to keep at least 10 episodes with an average runtime of 43–62 minutes, just like the first season, which premiered one episode on a weekly basis, in order to be consistent in their storylines and keep the fans interested.
So, we advise fans to be patient while they await this information, which will be released in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, you can also binge-watch all the episodes exclusively on Apple TV+, which offers premium, compelling drama and comedy series, feature films, groundbreaking documentaries, and kids and family entertainment and is available to watch across all your favorite screens with a selection of membership tiers from which viewers can pick according to their preferences. On the other hand, international viewers can also use VPNs if their region doesn’t have access to the series.
