Ever since Sweet Tooth premiered on Netflix on June 4, 2021, it observed an ascending popularity graph. Based on the comic book series by Jeff Lemire, the DC comic series achieved a lightning season 2 order, which is obviously a no-brainer.

Set in a post-apocalyptic future where a viral pandemic becomes the cause of the deaths of millions, the series is modeled around the protagonist, Gus, a hybrid baby who assumes the form of a half-human, half-deer, residing in a remote location with his father. Sweet Tooth is produced by Warner Brothers Television, DC Entertainment, and Team Downey.

The official synopsis of the show, according to Netflix, reads: “On a perilous adventure across a post-apocalyptic world, a lovable boy who’s half-human and half-deer searches for a new beginning with a gruff protector.”

With the news of Sweet Tooth season 3 renewal, fans of the show have been twiddling with their thumbs, attempting to extract as much information and updates as they can in order to stay with their favorite characters for a longer time than expected.

If you’re one of them, then I think it’s your lucky day because you’ve landed in the right place. All your rumors will be clarified, and guess what? It will happen in a good way.

When was Sweet Tooth officially renewed for a third season?

Sweet Tooth was renewed for a third season a few days after the second season dropped on the official streamer, that is, on May 3, 2023. As exhilarating as the news sounded at that moment, fans realized later that it was just to cushion the blow. Netflix confirmed that the third season will seal the fate of the show.

When it comes to the renewal of any show, Netflix considers a litany of determining factors, including production cost, viewership figures, and more. Be that as it may, normally these factors are reckoned after the show has premiered and it’s been streaming for a couple of weeks. Seldom has the streaming platform renewed any show before the subsequent season or the show has streamed.

However, it seemed that Netflix made an exception in the case of Sweet Tooth. Before the show was officially renewed for a third season, the respective CVs and professional profiles of multiple crew members suggested that production on season 3 had already begun since late summer 2022.

Jim Mickle confirms the statement by mentioning that seasons 2 and 3 were shot back to back in a Tweet that officially announced the news. The Tweet read, “Been sitting on this news for a loooong time. For those wondering why it took so long to make Season 2… it’s because we made TWO seasons back-to-back.”

Mickle, in a statement released by Netflix, said:

“In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life. At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going.”

What can we expect to happen in Sweet Tooth Season 3?

As mentioned previously, Sweet Tooth is set in a dystopian crumbling society that has been immensely affected by a viral epidemic of a disease called the Sick, which obliterated a majority of the world’s population. Resultantly, a spike in the birth of hybrid kids, half human and half animal was observed, whose inexplicable existence forms the theme of the series.

In the season 1 finale, in the wake of Gus being captured by The Last Men, the rest of the coterie plans to save him. Fortunately, Big Man, who was wounded terribly, survived his wounds. Additionally, Gus’ mother’s (Alaska) location has been unraveled, which could give us an insight into where their voyage is heading. Per the comic, she is expected to be finding the cure.

In the previous season, we also realize that Pigtail is Bear’s lost sister, Jepperd’s son is probably the black sheep, and Birdie is alive in Alaska and who has established contact with Bear via a satellite phone. Although much has already happened in the first season, there is more story to tell since the show is based on the comics.

As per the official statement released by showrunner Jim Mickle, season 3 will be an “Arctic story.” It reads:

“Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2.”

Mickle also reveals, “Everybody is dealing with some kind of wound or emotional loss, whether that was somebody in their life or a part of themselves. Everybody is looking inward and looking to move on and ultimately learning that life doesn’t stop. You have to keep putting one foot in front of another.”

Unfortunately, yes! Speaking to ComicBook.com, showrunner Jim Mickle expresses his conundrum over featuring an ending that resembles the original Lemire comics or getting inspired from the 2020 sequel Sweet Tooth: The Return. Mickle explained:

“I mean, both really. Because I love both of those, but I think, I love the Arctic story. That was a big part. And in the comic book, I love that, and John Carpenter’s The Thing is my favorite movie, and I love stories that take place there. So I would absolutely, absolutely love to do that. And I love when the comic opens and suddenly you’re on the ship with those guys and Thacker and all that. So I love that kind of stuff…I love where the comic book goes, and I think the beauty is that, again, it’s like we can kind of use the backbones of those things and we can use the big story points for those things. And obviously there’s some mythology that we’ve created in history and all that we’ve created that does jive with that. And that’s kind of the beauty of mixing all that stuff together. So yeah, let’s hope that season 2 does well.”
