Renewed for a season three just a few days after the second season dropped on the official streamer, Sweet Tooth’s ascending popularity graph has created for itself a loyal fanbase. However, the renewal was just to cushion the blow when Netflix confirmed that the third season would seal the fate of the show. Consequently, fans are constantly twiddling their thumbs to watch the third and the final season.

Based on the DC comic book series by Jeff Lemire, the Netflix drama is set in a post-apocalyptic future where a viral pandemic becomes the cause of the deaths of millions. Modeled around the protagonist, Gus, a hybrid baby who assumes the form of a half-human, half-deer residing in a remote location with his father, the official synopsis of the show, according to Netflix, reads: “On a perilous adventure across a post-apocalyptic world, a lovable boy who’s half-human and half-deer searches for a new beginning with a gruff protector.”

Sweet Tooth is produced by Warner Brothers Television, DC Entertainment, and Team Downey. No matter how fantastic the first two seasons have been, and we expect the same from the third, the growing concern at the moment is the writers’ and actors’ strikes, which have shut down the production schedules of some of the highest-grossing movies and web-series of the official streamer, including Stranger Things, Outer Banks, The Sandman and more.

Will Sweet Tooth Season 3 also have to face the brunt of it?

You’ll be relieved to know.

Fortunately, filming for Sweet Tooth season 3 was officially wrapped in June 2022. The filming for the third season was simultaneously shot with the second season in New Zealand. Jim Mickle confirms the statement by mentioning that seasons 2 and 3 were shot back to back in a Tweet that officially announced the news. The Tweet read, “Been sitting on this news for a loooong time. For those wondering why it took so long to make Season 2… it’s because we made TWO seasons back-to-back.”

This means that the strikes won’t extend the release date of Sweet Tooth, and in fact, we expect a late 2023 or early 2024 release date.

There are some exciting updates brewing in this cauldron of Sweet Tooth season 3 that we think you should know. According to executive producers Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell, in the third season, the “tension is high.” Downey said, “The ticking clock of, ‘Can they achieve their goal before it’s too late?’ is ratcheted up.”

To which Burrell adds, “It just keeps amping up. It feels like a culmination emotionally and you get to see all of these characters together and their philosophies really at odds. Tension is high.”

Not only that but according to Sweet Tooth star Christian Convery, there will be a tonal shift in the upcoming installment of this apocalyptic drama. Convery said, “Season 3 is darker than Season 2. Gus is growing alongside the series, starting to mature as the themes get darker. There’s a lot he has to deal with, and it’s peak Sweet Tooth intensity.”

However, at the time of writing this article, the creators have not revealed anything as such regarding the changes in the age rating. The past two seasons have consistently been rated as TV-14. We expect the same to happen for the third season as well.

As mentioned previously, Sweet Tooth is set in a dystopian crumbling society that has been immensely affected by a viral epidemic of a disease called the Sick, which obliterated a majority of the world’s population. Resultantly, a spike in the birth of hybrid kids, half human and half animal, was observed, whose inexplicable existence forms the theme of the series.

In the season 1 finale, in the wake of Gus being captured by The Last Men, the rest of the coterie plans to save him. Fortunately, Big Man, who was wounded terribly, survived his wounds. Additionally, Gus’ mother’s (Alaska) location has been unraveled, which could give us an insight into where their voyage is heading. Per the comic, she is expected to be finding the cure.

In the previous season, we also realize that Pigtail is Bear’s lost sister, Jepperd’s son is probably the black sheep, and Birdie is alive in Alaska and who has established contact with Bear via a satellite phone. Although much has already happened in the first season, there is more story to tell since the show is based on the comics.

As per the official statement released by showrunner Jim Mickle, season 3 will be an “Arctic story.” It reads:

“It’s another road trip story like Season 1, but in a very different way. Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2. In Season 3, everybody is dealing with some kind of wound or emotional loss, whether that was somebody in their life or a part of themselves. Everybody is looking inward and looking to move on and ultimately learning that life doesn’t stop. You have to keep putting one foot in front of another.”

Christian Convery’s Gus and Nonso Anozie’s Tommy Jepperd will undoubtedly reprise their respective roles in the potential third season. In addition to them, we also expect the following cast members to reprise their roles:

  • Adeel Akhtar as Dr Singh
  •  Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear
  • Naledi Murray as Wendy
  • Christopher Sean Cooper Jr as Teddy
  • Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh
  • Neil Sandilands as General Abbot

Per Digital Spy, “One person who will not be returning for season three is Marlon Williams’ Johnny Abbot” since he was “tragically” shot dead by Douglas towards the end of the second season. Not only him, but Dania Ramirez will also not be playing Aimee Eden anymore since she, unfortunately, succumbed to The Sick.

Additionally, Netflix confirmed four new cast additions/changes, along with the season 3 announcement. They include:

  • Rosalind Chao as Zhang (upgraded to a series regular)
  • Amy Seimetz as Birdie (upgraded to a series regular)

  • Ayazhan Dalabayeva as Nuka

Unfortunately, yes! Speaking to ComicBook.com, showrunner Jim Mickle expresses his conundrum over featuring an ending that resembles the original Lemire comics or getting inspired from the 2020 sequel Sweet Tooth: The Return. Mickle explained:

“I mean, both really. Because I love both of those, but I think, I love the Arctic story. That was a big part. And in the comic book, I love that, and John Carpenter’s The Thing is my favorite movie, and I love stories that take place there. So I would absolutely, absolutely love to do that. And I love when the comic opens and suddenly you’re on the ship with those guys and Thacker and all that. So I love that kind of stuff…I love where the comic book goes, and I think the beauty is that, again, it’s like we can kind of use the backbones of those things and we can use the big story points for those things. And obviously there’s some mythology that we’ve created in history and all that we’ve created that does jive with that. And that’s kind of the beauty of mixing all that stuff together. So yeah, let’s hope that season 2 does well.”
