Based on the comic book by Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth premiered on Netflix on June 4, 2021. Ever since its popularity graph has predictably observed an ascending line. It did not come off as a surprise when the DC comic series was given a swift season 2 order. Coming from Warner Brothers Television, DC Entertainment, and Team Downey, the series is temporally set in a post-apocalyptic future where a viral pandemic becomes the cause of the deaths of millions. It also results in the emergence of hybrid babies. The protagonist of the series is Gus, a young boy who is a half-human, half-deer residing in a remote location with his father.

The official synopsis of the show, according to Netflix, reads: “On a perilous adventure across a post-apocalyptic world, a lovable boy who’s half-human and half-deer searches for a new beginning with a gruff protector.”

Ever since Sweet Tooth was rumoured to be renewed for a third season before its second season’s premiere, fans of the show have been twiddling with their thumbs, hoping to stay with the characters for a longer time than expected. If you’re one of them, then I think it’s your lucky day because you’ve landed in the right place. All your rumours will be clarified and guess what? It will happen in a good way…

Has Netflix officially renewed Sweet Tooth for a third season?

As you might probably be aware, Netflix has a slew of determining factors that ascertain the renewal of any show such as production cost, viewership figures and more. Be that as it may, normally these factors are reckoned after the show has premiered and it’s been streaming for a couple of weeks. Seldom has the streaming platform renewed any show before the subsequent season or the show has streamed. But we believe that Netflix has made an exception for Sweet Tooth.  You know why? Sources suggest the involvement of multiple crew members of the show who have started working on season 3 since late summer 2022, as per their respective CVs and professional profiles.

The confirmation for season renewal comes a few days after the second season debuted on the official streamer, that is, on May 3rd, 2023. Unfortunately, Netflix also confirms that the third season will seal the fate of the show.

As we had already mentioned in our previous article, Sweet Tooth season 3 was in works back when its second season had not been even released on Netflix. Jim Mickle confirms the statement by mentioning that seasons 2 and 3 were shot back to back in a Tweet that officially announced the news. The Tweet read, “Been sitting on this news for a loooong time. For those wondering why it took so long to make Season 2… it’s because we made TWO seasons back-to-back”

Mickle, in a statement released by Netflix, said:

“In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life. At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going.”

What can we expect to happen in Sweet Tooth Season 3?

For those unversed, Sweet Tooth revolves around a crumbling society that has been immensely affected by a viral epidemic of a disease called the Sick, which wiped out the majority of the world’s population. Consequently, the society observed a spike in the birth of hybrid kids, half human and half animal, whose existence was inexplicable to the core.

In the season 1 finale, we see Gus has been captured by The Last Men. The rest of the coterie decides to draw out a plan which could save him. Fortunately, Big Man, who was wounded terribly, survived his wounds. Not only that, but by the first season’s end, we know where Gus’ mother is (Alaska) which could us give an insight into where their voyage will be headed. As per the comic, it is believed that she’s up there finding the cure.

In the final episode of the first season, we discover that Pigtail is Bear’s lost sister, Jepperd’s son is probably the black sheep and Birdie is alive in Alaska and who has established contact with Bear via a satellite phone. So much has already happened in the first season, but since the show is based on the comics, there is more story to tell.

As per the official statement released by showrunner Jim Mickle, season 3 will be an “Arctic story.” It reads:

“Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2.”

How many episodes will be constituted in Sweet Tooth Season 3?

The third season of Sweet Tooth will reportedly consist eight episodes, which will be directed by Ciaran Foy, Carol Banker, Toa Fraser, and Jim Mickle. Per WGA, the list of eight episodes and writers include:

  • Episode 301 – Written by: Noah Griffith & Daniel Stewart
  • Episode 302 – Written by: Zaike LaPorte Airey
  • Episode 303 – Written by: Carly Woodworth
  • Episode 304 – Written by: Kseniya Melnik & Noah Griffith & Daniel Stewart
  • Episode 305 – Written by: Oanh Ly & Daniel G. King
  • Episode 306 – Written by: Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt
  • Episode 307 – Written by: Noah Griffith & Daniel Stewart

Christian Convery’s Guys and Nonso Anozie’s Tommy Jepperd will undoubtedly reprise their respective roles in the potential third season. In addition to them, we also expect the following cast members to reprise their roles:

  • Adeel Akhtar as Dr Singh
  •  Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear
  • Naledi Murray as Wendy
  • Christopher Sean Cooper Jr as Teddy
  • Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh
  • Neil Sandilands as General Abbot

Per Digital Spy, “One person who will not be returning for season three is Marlon Williams’ Johnny Abbot”, since he was “tragically” shot dead by Douglas towards the end of the second season. Not only him, but Dania Ramirez will also not be playing Aimee Eden anymore, since she unfortunately succumbed to The Sick.

Additionally, Netflix confirmed four new cast additions/changes, along with season 3 announcement. They include:

  • Rosalind Chao as Zhang (upgraded to a series regular)
  • Amy Seimetz as Birdie (upgraded to a series regular)
  • Cara Gee as TBA
  • Ayazhan Dalabayeva as Nuka

Unfortunately, yes! In an interview with ComicBook.com, showrunner Jim Mickle was questioned whether the show would return for a third season and whether it will be the last. Thankfully, Mickle leans towards an optimistic tone about the third season of Sweet Tooth and expresses his conundrum over featuring an ending that resembles the original Lemire comics or to get inspired from the 2020 sequel Sweet Tooth: The Return. Mickle explained:

“I mean, both really. Because I love both of those, but I think, I love the Arctic story. That was a big part. And in the comic book, I love that, and John Carpenter’s The Thing is my favorite movie, and I love stories that take place there. So I would absolutely, absolutely love to do that. And I love when the comic opens and suddenly you’re on the ship with those guys and Thacker and all that. So I love that kind of stuff…I love where the comic book goes, and I think the beauty is that, again, it’s like we can kind of use the backbones of those things and we can use the big story points for those things. And obviously there’s some mythology that we’ve created in history and all that we’ve created that does jive with that. And that’s kind of the beauty of mixing all that stuff together. So yeah, let’s hope that season 2 does well.”
