While Taylor Swift usually stays miles away from controversies and uncalled attention, the queen of pop still manages to stay in the limelight. Oftentimes when she is name-dropped by lovers and haters alike.
This time, it is her ex-boyfriend Matty Healy’s mother, Denise Welch, who declared she was “glad” to not have ended up as the singer’s mother-in-law.
In an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live!” Thursday, Welch, 67, didn’t mince her words when host Andy Cohen asked for her reaction to Swift’s 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department, which is believed to have several references to Healy.
“Obviously, on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but not being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost,” she said, while the audience gasped at the reaction.
“Not that I have anything against her at all,” she added. “It was just — it was tricky.”
She went on to elaborate her answer, saying, “She — listen, you’re not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album about it.”
Healy, 36, and Swift’s romance was short-lived, as the couple dated from May to June 2023, following the Cruel Summer singer’s split from British actor Joe Alwyn.
Rumors suggest that Swift wrote TTPD’s title track, Guilty As Sin, Down Bad, Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) about Healy.
The Grammy-winning singer is now in a relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who has recently made their relationship Instagram official.
The NFL star hard launched his ultrafamous girlfriend on Instagram with a carousel of private photos from their various outings.
No longer than Swift’s much-awaited Instagram debut on Kelce’s page, their engagement rumors started buzzing.
What caught the fans’ attention, specifically, was Kelce’s phone lock screen.
In the photo, the Red singer is seen flashing her hand, sparking speculation that the couple might have quietly gotten engaged.
Fans were quick to comment, with one saying, “The lock screen are you kidding me???”
Another one wrote, “Me looking at Travis’ phone background.”
But the rumors were short-lived, as People noted that the image seems to be from Swift’s July 6, 2024 Eras Tour concert in Amsterdam that Kelce attended as both are seen wearing the same outfits that they wore to the concert.
Kelce’s decision to go IG official coincides with the second anniversary of their initial meeting in July 2023. It started with Travis famously attempting to give Taylor a friendship bracelet with his number.
This is not the first time their engagement rumors have been doing the rounds. Earlier last month, Swift dismissed the rumors by calling Kelce her ‘boyfriend’ while visiting a children’s hospital in Hollywood, Florida.
Since then, the couple has preferred spending more quiet time together to avoid any unwanted attention.
“They are making fewer public appearances together because [their relationship] brings too much unwanted attention, but there isn’t trouble in paradise,” an insider told Us Weekly in June.
While their low-key romance is keeping fans on their toes waiting for Kelce to pop the all-important question, it looks like the time might not be quite here since the Chiefs star is back on the practice field for the new NFL season.
Chiefs will be based at Missouri Western State University in St Joseph from Tuesday until August 13.
