The ever-expanding Conjuring Universe is all set to release a sequel of the highly-successful 2018 movie, The Nun, in theatres next fall. Becoming the highest-grossing movie in The Conjuring Universe, it would come off as a surprise if it wasn’t renewed for a sequel.

For those unversed, The Nun followed the lives of the nuns at a monastery in 1950s Romania. The demon featured in the film is Valak, who made her first appearance in 2016’s The Conjuring 2. The Nun 2 will possibly follow Sister Irene and her encounter with the demon Valak. Not only that, but considering the plot lines of other movies belonging to The Conjuring Universe, The Nun 2 will expectedly focus on joining the dots and connecting its plot with the main chronology.

When will The Nun 2 be released on Netflix?

According to sources, The Nun 2 will reportedly release in theatres on September 8, 2023. The release date was unveiled by Warner Bros, while they changed a slew of release dates of other movies, including the delay of Aquaman 2.

What can we expect to happen in The Nun 2?

There are parallel movie franchises running through the main Conjuring Universe, including the Annabelle spin-off and the New Line Cinema’s The Nun spin-off. The Nun follows the life of Sister Irene, who travels to a Romanian monastery with Father Burke to investigate the case of a nun who allegedly took her own life. A slew of paranormal episodes leads the duo to conclude that a portentous demon named Valak is haunting the abbey and is in possession of the people living there. The end of the movie does not end with a conventional defeat over the demon.

The sequel will possibly pick up from where its progenitor left off and bring Sister Irene tete-a-tete with Valak once again. In addition to that, the sequel will reportedly pick up in 1956, four years after the first film. The setting will move to France from Romania. The murder of a priest brings Sister Irene face to face with Valak in the sequel.

Who are the cast members of The Nun 2?

At the time of writing, Bonnie Aarons, who will be reprising the titular role of the Nun, Valak, is confirmed to return in The Nun 2 as well. In addition, Taissa Farmiga will also be returning as Sister Irene in the sequel, according to DigitalFix.

According to Deadline, Anna Popplewell, popularly known for her role as Susan Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia, and Katelyn Rose Downey will be joining the cast of The Nun 2. Not much information has been revealed regarding their roles, except Popplewell reprising the role of Marcella, the widowed mother of 10-year-old Sophie.

According to JoBlo, a casting call was made, which revealed two additional roles which will be featured in the next installment of The Nun. The first is the role of a 10-year-old girl named Sophie, as mentioned previously. Sophie is a student at St. Mary’s School in France, who becomes friends with Frenchie, a savior protecting her from the school bullies. The second is the role of Antoinette, a 14-year-old leader of the group of bullies at St. Mary’s School in France.

Directed by Michael Chavez (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), screenplay written by Akela Cooper (Malignant), The Nun 2 is produced by James Wan alongside Peter Safran, with Gary Dauberman and Michael Clear serving as the executive producers of the project.
