The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: The Plot

Because the film is based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s best-selling novel of the same name, the screenplay will undoubtedly be inspired by the novel. One thing to keep in mind is that the book is being adapted into a movie that might last for around 2 hours, so it will be interesting to watch how the director and scriptwriters will go about translating about 400 pages of a novel with complicated characters and plotlines into a film.

In a statement provided by Netflix, below is a condensed overview of the novel enabling readers to know the plot and what to expect from the film.

Released in 2017, the best-selling novel centers around the reclusive yet iconic Hollywood legend Evelyn Hugo as she recounts the details of her life to an unknown magazine reporter named Monique Grant, who is unsure of why such a public figure has chosen her to write her biography. Through her conversations with Monique, Evelyn unfolds a journey of fame, ambition, friendship, and forbidden love — plus, of course, stories concerning each of her seven husbands… and one big confession along the way.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was met with critical acclaim upon its release, went on to become a New York Times bestseller, and received a Goodreads Choice Award nomination for Best Historical Fiction in 2017. It’s since caught the attention of BookTokers and Bookstagrammers all over the world, and even inspired plenty of Evelyn Hugo cosplay online.

Reid, who also penned the best-selling novel Daisy Jones & the Six, will executive produce the screen adaptation with Margaret Chernin, while Liz Tigelaar (Little Fires Everywhere and Casual) will write the screenplay. This project will continue Netflix’s creative partnership with Liza Chasin and 3dot Productions, who will serve as producers along with Brad Mendelsohn for Circle of Confusion.

Take a look at some fan’s reactions

While the announcement is thrilling for fans to get their favorite novel in an on-screen adaptation, many have expressed concern that the screenplay would be better if the novel was adapted into an 8 to 10 episodes television series rather than a film. To be honest, fans’ complaints are reasonable because these adaptations occasionally fail to meet their expectations, which they have already created by reading every small and significant component of the book.

Only time will tell whether Netflix considers turning it into a limited series in order to transmit all of the crucial scenes that readers appreciated on the pages. Fans, on the other hand, should be thankful because there aren’t many novels that receive such a positive reception and attention when adapted into a film. Furthermore, fans should keep in mind that movie adaptations are not always bad.

For example, Gone Girl, a 2012 crime thriller novel by American writer Gillian Flynn, was turned into a 2h 29m motion picture which was a great watch that people who hadn’t even read the book loved and appreciated the screenplay that kept the viewers invested in the storyline.

Fans should not give up hope at this early stage when the film is still in pre-production. As there is a lot to look forward to in the coming months.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: The Cast And Crew Members

It was reported on March 24, 2022, that Netflix would adapt the novel into a feature picture, with Liz Tigelaar writing and Margaret Chernin as executive producer.

Furthermore, Netflix has yet to make any formal cast announcements for the highly anticipated film. Fans, on the other hand, have been interpreting their versions of the characters online in order to determine who will be the best fit for the characters’ on-screen adaptations. Last but not least, Jessica Chastain, Ana de Armas, and Amy Adams are the fan favorites for the cast as Celia St. James who want them to appear in this film.

However, there is a chance that multiple females will be cast for the same role: Evelyn Hugo is a 79-year-old woman in the novel, but we will experience her life from the age of 14, giving actresses the opportunity to share the lead and represent the already iconic role. Perhaps a younger and lesser-known actress to play the younger Evelyn and an established star to play the older Evelyn would be a nice choice.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo Trailer

There is currently no trailer for Netflix’s adaptation of Evelyn Hugo’s novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Once filming begins and the cast, writers, and Netflix begin to promote the adaptation, fans should expect a teaser. Meanwhile, readers can revisit the novel for the time being to immerse themselves in this world and remember the journey through the pages, as well as keep a lookout for any fresh updates that may be issued soon.
