Bagging the most-watched Netflix series ever (surpassing Stranger Things), Wednesday is back for another Season full of mystery, uncovering horrid crimes, witty remarks, a Wednesday-Enid friendship, the legendary Addams Family, and a whole lot of weirdness. The anticipation for a Season 2 update is running at an all-time high, and it is difficult to turn it down. Wednesday has invoked a worldwide audience and will continue to do so throughout the upcoming seasons. As for Season 2, we have a few updates!
Ever since the groundbreaking announcement, which was released by Netflix on January 6th, 2023, fans have been scratching their heads over what is awaiting them on the other side of Season 2. When will it be released? And recent developments surrounding the strike have led us to ask one very important question: Are there any expectations for September?
Netflix confirmed a Season 2 renewal in an interesting announcement video where Jenna Ortega ironically thanks her audience for torturing her, saying,
“Over the past few weeks, I’ve been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet(referring to her dance which caught the internet by storm). It’s been pure torture. Thank you!”

Wednesday Season 2 Release Updates: Are There Any Expectations For September?
The highest-watched series on Netflix will be back with more suspense, horror, and riveting mystery culminations. Since the first moments of Wednesday Addams’ portrayal in Season 1 Episode One, we knew it was one of those stories that would never go unnoticed. As the first season drew to an end, we thought all the plotlines had reached a conclusion when an unforeseen event struck in the final few seconds of the episode, lurching us into the throes of a New Season!
We are currently towards the end of the third month of the strike, and so far, it is confirmed that filming has not taken place yet. However, while it was speculated to begin in the fall, the possibility of that happening seems bleak.
Catherin Zeta-Jones (who plays Morticia Addams) confirmed that production will begin by the fall of 2023. Additionally, in a conversation with Jimmy Falon, Jenna Ortega said that the writers’ room has already assembled to determine the direction in which they wanted to steer Season 2. She said,
“No vacations or anything like that. We are starting to prep season two on Wednesday, which…has been exciting. Just developing new storylines and seeing where characters are going. Starting those conversations has been fun. I think it’s going to be bigger and better, which is cool.”
Additionally, Sophie Holland (the casting director) reported to Deadline saying,
“It’s still early doors and I’m still waiting on the script. We hope to roll at the end of the year. I think there are some exciting and kooky characters coming up in season two.”
How much of it will be affected by the ongoing strike? This is still under speculation. But given that the writers have joined WGA to raise the writer’s voices against unfair practices in the industry, the situation seems bleak for the scripts. It is essential to note that until a favorable negotiation has been met by the production houses, there is no hope for September 2023.
Wednesday Season 2 Status: Current Strike Update
With its renewal announcement, fans were eagerly anticipating the arrival of Wednesday Season 2 by the end of 2023. However, seems like fate had other plans for the series.
May 2023 witnessed the onslaught of the gravest writer’s protest in the form of the WGA union. Amidst the protest, several competing networks updated their fall broadcast schedules in anticipation of the dissipation of the strikes within the next month.
However, in July, the actors union SAG-AFTRA also joined in the protest for their wage rights and better protection against the hindsight of Artificial Intelligence. The last time such a large-scale strike sent Hollywood productions into an indefinite hiatus was 63 whole years ago! We are currently in the third month of this double-strike situation, and there are no hopes for any reconciliation through negotiations.
In a recent meeting held for the first time in more than three months, the Writers Guild and the AMPTP on Friday failed to reach an agreement to resume contract negotiations. Their inability to agree on terms for returning to the bargaining table comes after their much-anticipated meeting to discuss a possible resumption of talks.
“As of now, there is no agreement on these items, because the AMPTP said they needed to consult with their member studios before moving forward,” the union said in a statement recently.
This caused massive confusion and buzz amidst the fandom. We are currently nearing the end of three months of the strike, and no bouts of development or simmering down have been reported. However, we have come across a recent announcement sharing a possible retreat from the indefinite hiatus situation caused by the strike.
Hollywood’s striking writers and major studios have agreed to hold talks on Friday for the first time since their strike began over higher pay demands in May 2023. “We’ll be back in communication with you sometime after the meeting with further information,” the committee told its members in its note. Though it seems like good news, that doesn’t mean that the chance of the series being delayed further is still on the table if the strikes gain more momentum and don’t reach a resolution within the next few weeks, especially after the meeting.
So it looks like the wait will be longer than anticipated for Wednesday Season 2.
Wednesday Season 2 Release Date: When Can We Expect Its Arrival?
Let’s recap how Season 1 followed the filming and release trajectory. According to reports, the cast and crew started production in the fall of 2021 and wrapped in the spring of 2022 in Romania. The season was released about seven to eight months after production ended, so that’s the timeline we’re looking at for Wednesday season 2.
In that capacity, if the filming for Season 2 begins by fall (say October), we can expect a Season 2 release by 2024 Winter (November or December)
This prediction can only come true if the strike simmers down and the WGA SAG AFTRA demands are met by September or latest, October. Otherwise, we may be expecting a release in January 2025!
Wednesday Season 2 Cast: Who Will Reprise Their Roles And Who Won’t?
This is an unsure list because of the major cliffhangers we were left with in Season 1. But this is a fair guess of who will return in Season 2:
- Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams
- Riki Lindhome as Dr. Valeria Kinbott
- Jamie McShane as Sheriff Donovan Galpin
- Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin
- Percy Hynes White as Xavier Thorpe
- Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair
- Moosa Mostafa as Eugene Ottinger
- Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay
- Georgie Farmer as Ajax Petropolus
- Naomi J. Ogawa as Yoko Tanaka
- Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams
- Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
- Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester
- Victor Dorobantu as Thing
- George Burcea as Lurch
- Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
The two speculated returns we are looking forward to are those of:
- Christina Ricci as Ms. Thornhill (She was defeated by Wednesday, but they never mentioned if she was killed. Moreover, her character had not yet fulfilled her purpose to rid nevermore of outcasts). Sidenote: Ricci played Wednesday Addams in the 1990s film.
- Gwendoline Christie as Larissa Weems. She was pronounced dead, but we never got to attend her funeral. Moreover, an interesting fan theory speculates that Lurk’s eyes in the ending scene of the Season 1 finale were a different color(blue) from what it was in the beginning. Was it Weems who shapeshifted to Lurk? This was also confirmed by Christie when she said,
“We haven’t seen her put in the ground, have we? I feel like Larissa Weems would not be prepared to entertain or be dominated by anything as commonplace as death.”
Another rumor is Lady Gaga is joining in Season 2. This is still a rumor since nothing has been confirmed yet. But just imagine how iconic it will be. (courtesy of Digital Spy)
Another interesting character we are speculated to watch is Christopher Lloyd (who played Uncle Fester in the 1990 Addams Family movie). In a conversation with Yahoo, he said,
“I’ve heard rumors trickling down that I might be coming on,” he says. “I’m not sure how, but I think [Ortega] is wonderful.”
Additionally, the cast in a show-up at Netflix TUDUM revealed that a new member of the Addams Family will be introduced in Season 2. Season 1 introduced Uncle Fester. Will Season 2 feature Cousin Itt(whom Ortega prefers) or the Grandmother (whom Hunter prefers)?
