Cobwebs. Coffins. Blank Stares. Boogie Dances.
Wednesday Addams will be back with another torturous season on Netflix.
But when?
Ever since the groundbreaking announcement, which was released by Netflix on January 6, 2023, fans have been scratching their heads over what is awaiting them on the other side of Wednesday Season 2. When will it be released? And recent developments surrounding the strike have led us to ask one very important question: When will it arrive?
Bagging the most-watched Netflix series ever (surpassing Stranger Things), Wednesday is back for another Season full of mystery, uncovering horrid crimes, witty remarks, a Wednesday-Enid friendship, the legendary Addams Family, and a whole lot of weirdness. The anticipation for a Season 2 update is running at an all-time high, and it is difficult to turn it down. Wednesday has invoked a worldwide audience and will continue to do so throughout the upcoming seasons.
As for Season 2, we have a few updates! Ever since the groundbreaking announcement, which was released by Netflix on January 6th, 2023, fans have been scratching their heads over what is awaiting them on the other side of Season 2. When will it be released?
Netflix confirmed a Season 2 renewal in an interesting announcement video where Jenna Ortega ironically thanks her audience for torturing her, saying, “Over the past few weeks, I’ve been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet(referring to her dance which caught the internet by storm). It’s been pure torture. Thank you!”
Check out the announcement video below:
Wednesday Season 2 Is Confirmed! It Is Coming Back
The highest-watched series on Netflix will be back with more suspense, horror, and riveting mystery culminations. Since the first moments of Wednesday Addams’ portrayal in Season 1 Episode One, we knew it was one of those stories that would never go unnoticed.
As the first season drew to an end, we thought all the plotlines had reached a conclusion when an unforeseen event struck in the final few seconds of the episode, lurching us into the throes of a New Season. We are currently towards the end of the third month of the strike, and so far, it is confirmed that filming has not taken place yet. However, while it was speculated to begin in the fall, the possibility of that happening seems bleak.
Catherin Zeta-Jones (who plays Morticia Addams) confirmed that production will begin by the fall of 2023. Additionally, in a conversation with Jimmy Falon, Jenna Ortega said that the writers’ room has already assembled to determine the direction in which they wanted to steer Season 2. She said, “No vacations or anything like that. We are starting to prep season two on Wednesday, which…has been exciting. Just developing new storylines and seeing where characters are going. Starting those conversations has been fun. I think it’s going to be bigger and better, which is cool.”
Additionally, Sophie Holland (the casting director) reported to Deadline, “It’s still early doors and I’m still waiting on the script. We hope to roll at the end of the year. I think there are some exciting and kooky characters coming up in season two.”
How much of it will be affected by the ongoing strike? This is still under speculation. But given that the writers have joined WGA to raise their voices against unfair practices in the industry, the situation seems bleak for the scripts. It is essential to note that until a favorable negotiation has been met by the production houses, there is no hope for 2023.
Wednesday Season 2 Status: Current Strike Update
With its renewal announcement, fans were eagerly anticipating the arrival of Wednesday Season 2 by the end of 2023. However, seems like fate had other plans for the series. May 2023 witnessed the onslaught of the gravest writer’s protest in the form of the WGA union. Amidst the protest, several competing networks updated their fall broadcast schedules in anticipation of the dissipation of the strikes within the next month. However, in July, the actors union SAG-AFTRA also joined in the protest for their wage rights and better protection against the hindsight of Artificial Intelligence. The last time such a large-scale strike sent Hollywood productions into an indefinite hiatus was 63 whole years ago! We are currently in the third month of this double-strike situation, and there are no hopes for any reconciliation through negotiations.
In a recent meeting held for the first time in more than three months, the Writers Guild and the AMPTP on Friday failed to reach an agreement to resume contract negotiations. Their inability to agree on terms for returning to the bargaining table comes after their much-anticipated meeting to discuss a possible resumption of talks. “As of now, there is no agreement on these items, because the AMPTP said they needed to consult with their member studios before moving forward,” the union said in a statement recently.
This caused massive confusion and buzz amidst the fandom. We are currently nearing the end of three months of the strike, and no bouts of development or simmering down have been reported. However, we have come across a recent announcement sharing a possible retreat from the indefinite hiatus situation caused by the strike. Hollywood’s striking writers and major studios have agreed to hold talks on Friday for the first time since their strike began over higher pay demands in May 2023.
“We’ll be back in communication with you sometime after the meeting with further information,” the committee told its members in its note. Though it seems like good news, that doesn’t mean that the chance of the series being delayed further is still on the table if the strikes gain more momentum and don’t reach a resolution within the next few weeks, especially after the meeting.
So it looks like the wait will be longer than anticipated for Wednesday Season 2.
Wednesday Season 2 Release Date: When Can We Expect Its Arrival?
Let’s recap how Season 1 followed the filming and release trajectory. According to reports, the cast and crew started production in the fall of 2021 and wrapped in the spring of 2022 in Romania. The season was released about seven to eight months after production ended, so that’s the timeline we’re looking at for Wednesday season 2.
In that capacity, if the filming for Season 2 begins by fall (say October), we can expect a Season 2 release by 2024 Winter (November or December)
This prediction can only come true if the strike simmers down and the WGA SAG AFTRA demands are met by September or, at the latest, October. Otherwise, we may be expecting a release in January 2025!
Wednesday Season 2 Cast: Who Will Reprise Their Roles And Who Won’t?
This is an unsure list because of the major cliffhangers we were left with in Season 1. But this is a fair guess of who will return in Season 2:
- Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams
- Riki Lindhome as Dr. Valeria Kinbott
- Jamie McShane as Sheriff Donovan Galpin
- Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin
- Percy Hynes White as Xavier Thorpe
- Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair
- Moosa Mostafa as Eugene Ottinger
- Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay
- Georgie Farmer as Ajax Petropolus
- Naomi J. Ogawa as Yoko Tanaka
- Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams
- Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
- Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester
- Victor Dorobantu as Thing
- George Burcea as Lurch
- Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
The two speculated returns we are looking forward to are those of:
Christina Ricci as Ms. Thornhill (She was defeated by Wednesday, but they never mentioned if she was killed. Moreover, her character had not yet fulfilled her purpose to rid nevermore of outcasts). Sidenote: Ricci played Wednesday Addams in the 1990s film.
Gwendoline Christie as Larissa Weems. She was pronounced dead, but we never got to attend her funeral. Moreover, an interesting fan theory speculates that Lurk’s eyes in the ending scene of the Season 1 finale were a different color(blue) from what it was in the beginning. Was it Weems who shapeshifted to Lurk? This was also confirmed by Christie when she said,
“We haven’t seen her put in the ground, have we? I feel like Larissa Weems would not be prepared to entertain or be dominated by anything as commonplace as death.”
Rumors On Who Will Be Joining
Another rumor is Lady Gaga is joining in Season 2. This is still a rumor since nothing has been confirmed yet. But just imagine how iconic it will be. (courtesy of Digital Spy)
Another interesting character we are speculated to watch is Christopher Lloyd (who played Uncle Fester in the 1990 Addams Family movie). In a conversation with Yahoo, he said,
“I’ve heard rumors trickling down that I might be coming on,” he says. “I’m not sure how, but I think [Ortega] is wonderful.”
Additionally, the cast in a show-up at Netflix TUDUM revealed that a new member of the Addams Family will be introduced in Season 2. Season 1 introduced Uncle Fester. Will Season 2 feature Cousin Itt(whom Ortega prefers) or the Grandmother (whom Hunter prefers)?
Wednesday Season 2 Plot: What Can We Expect?
*Spoiler Alert*
There are several speculations on what the plot for Season 2 will bring to the plate.
For instance, The Showrunners revealed to The Hollywood Reporter what they can expect out of Season 2.
“We wanna sort of explore and sort of complicate all of those relationships going forward. The school was closed when they left, which gave us the most possibilities for season two, and I think that’s something that we’re excited to explore. For us, the show also is really about this female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid really being at the center of that. The fact that they really connected with audiences, has been really gratifying. So, we’re excited to explore now that Wednesday’s dipped her toe into the friendship pool, what’s that gonna look like? It’s like, she hugged. That was her big arc for the season, right? So it’s like now, we do that. Then, the other thing that’s really interesting is to continue to explore the Wednesday-Morticia mother-daughter relationship as well, which now that Morticia knows about the power, it has given her sort of an idea of how that’s going to go. How is their relationship going to evolve.”
With regards to Tyler’s role as the Hyde(Nevermore’s Beast), Hunter, in an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, said,
“I do think he escaped at the end. When I read that on the page, I was so excited. I was like: ‘Come on, don’t be dead, don’t be dead.”
It is obvious that we will be seeing more of Hyde since, in the final moments of the episode finale, Tyler turns into Hyde. So he probably escaped. But that begs the question: Who is the Hyde Master now that Thornhill is not around him? Is it Wednesday? Because when her car crosses the van in which Tyler is being held captive, he triggers Hyde. That will be an interesting twist.
We don’t have much information on that, but we do have information on the next theme, which is ROMANCE. Season 1 made it clear that romance was not cut out for Wednesday. The first boy she kissed turned out to be Hyde. Things with Xavier looked hopeful, but we doubt Xavier’s character will be back, given the actor’s recent controversial news.
Emma Myers (who plays Enid Sinclair) said,
“Anything is possible in the show. We haven’t really spoken about direction at all, so I don’t really know what the game plan is for anything. As far as love interests go for Wednesday, I feel like at least for a second season, she needs to take her season of singleness. She just had a whole fiasco with her men, she’s got to lay it off for a little bit. I would be deterred from dating anybody if I had gone through that.”
Collider also speculated the same saying,
“Given the way the season wrapped, it would make sense for Wednesday to go into a season 2 single. On the other hand, a relationship between Enid and Wednesday could be a brilliant stroke as well. The pair are polar opposites and Enid hopefully might be able to bring Wednesday out of her shell some more, but it would also go a long way to offer much-needed representation as well.”
Further, a recent Variety interview with Elle Falling featured Jenna Ortega, who confirmed that the ‘romance’ theme was discarded and replaced by ‘horror,’ saying, “We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”
So it is clear that Wednesday Season 2 will solve a few burning cliffhangers from Season One will steer away from romance and incline towards horror, will steer more into the lives of the cult classic Addams family, and we will watch Ortega in her badass avatar taking matters into her own hands!
The obsession over Wednesday Addams actually stems from the cult classic O.G. the Addams Family, a series from the 1960s, which was then adapted into the movies in the 1990s (where Christina Ricci actually played Wednesday). Our interest in the Addams family was why we clicked to watch Wednesday in the first place, so it will be intriguing to watch the family doing their thing in Season 2. For one, we cannot get over the ethereal romance between Morticia Addams and Gomez Addams, a love story to be truly reckoned with, which has set the bar high for modern relationships. We wish to see more Gomez-Morticia romance montages in Season 2 since they will be stripping us of romance in Wednesday’s life.

Wednesday Season 2: Fan Theories On What To Expect In Season 2′
After Season 1 was released, the internet was flooded with fan theories on some loopholes and clues left in Season 1 moving into Season 2. However, these were only theories until the cast of Wednesday, in conversation with Netflix TUDUM, decided to dive into these fan theories and teased a little about what we can expect to happen in Wednesday Season 2:
In the words of Morticia Addams, ” So, tell us everything!”
Who Will Hail Crackstones Ring
We were probably distracted by the whole over-the-top bloody fight between the resurrected Joseph Crackstone(who wanted to expunge the earth of outcasts whom he considered as abominations) and Wednesday Addams, who went through a resurrection sequence of her own. Well, sort of. When Ms. Thornhill (Or Laurel Gates as we know it now) resurrected her ancestor Crackstone to complete his job, he ended up stabbing Wednesday(who happened to be the spitting image of Goody Addams, Crackstone’s Nemesis and the founder of The Nightshades to protect the outcasts). In an attempt to save her, the spirit of Goody Addams(which Wednesday could conjure through the Talisman her mother gave her) entered Wednesday’s body and breathed life into her.
When the two (Crackstone and Wednesday) butted heads, Wednesday stabbed Crackstone erupted in a volcano of fire, and his ring dropped on the ground.
Did someone pick it up? If they did, did they inherit his powers? Do we have a new villain in our hands, even though negative sketchy characters are in abundance on Wednesday?
Was it Thing who was always crawling around?
Is it Eugene? His lonely demeanor and weirdness only got him one friend: Wednesday( that’s not a surprise considering how weird she is herself), and he has been the subject of bullying in the past as well. If he did inherit Crackstone’s ring, would he use it to teach the bullies a lesson? Or will he and Wednesday emerge as an undefeatable power duo fighting crime and solving mysteries? Now, there is a duo we didn’t think we needed.
Wednesday – The New Hyde Master?
This seems to be the case since a Hyde is triggered when its liberator says so since it creates a bond with it. We knew Ms. Thornhill nurtured Tyler to turn him into a Hyde, just like his mother. Thornhill used Tyler as Hyde to complete her mission of resurrecting Crackstone, and he helped her by killing people and collecting their body parts for the Blood Moon ritual.
Although it is unclear whether Thornhill was killed by Wednesday, something peculiar happened in the ending scene of Season 1. As soon as Wednesday’s car crossed the van in which Tyler was tied up, the Hyde inside him triggered.
Does this mean Wednesday is the new Hyde master? It would be interesting to see this dynamic since Tyler betrayed her trust, plus he tried to kill her, and we know how Wednesday feels about revenge. She popularly said
“I don’t believe in heaven or hell. But I do believe in revenge. I usually serve it warm with a side of pain.”
We will just have to wait to see the pain Wednesday inflicts on people who betrayed her in Season 2.
Weems – Lurch Theory
Principal Weems supposedly dies when Ms. Thornhill injects her with the nightshade poison. However, we never get to actually witness her funeral. Is she alive?
What’s interesting in the final part of Season 1 is Lurch’s eye color. It was black in the initial part of the Season, but in the ending scene, it turns blue. Weems had blue eyes, and she was a shape-shifter. She was so good that she convinced Thornhill that she was Tyler just to gather evidence.
We will see what is to follow in the next season, but know this. Principle Weems does not go into the night gently.
While we await the tantalizing mystery which is to follow in Wednesday Season 2, we urge you to do a rerun of all the episodes of Season 1 to refresh your memories. Wednesday Season 1 is available to stream on Netflix right now.
Wednesday Season 2: Official Trailer
