Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the showrunners of Wednesday, spoke with TV Guide in November 2022, about the conclusion of Season 1 and what it means for Season 2. Here are some of the interview’s highlights which contain some major spoilers.
Spoiler 1: Will Principal Larissa Weems return?
If you streamed the first season then you’ll recall that after being poisoned by Ms. Thornhill, we didn’t see Principal Larissa Weems recover consciousness, and now the second season of Wednesday will reveal whether Weems has passed away permanently or whether she somehow makes a comeback from the dead.
“We like the idea that people die in this world, that there are real sacrifices and there’s loss — and that Wednesday has to react to that,” Millar said. “For us, the fact that we could kill such a significant character, it was important that we did that.” Further adding, “That said, it’s a supernatural show, there are always ways people can return,” Millar added “Never say never, but at this point, she’s definitely dead.”
Although Millar left the door open, the actors on the show are not entirely persuaded that Weems’ death is irreversible. “I feel like Larissa Weems would never be dominated by something as commonplace as death,” Christie said. When asked whether the audience should believe Weems is dead, Jenna Ortega said, “I don’t even believe that one.” She added: “I can’t, I love Gwendoline Christie too much. I refuse to accept that as the truth.”
Spoilers 2: Will more information about the stalker be revealed?
This is a crucial question to which the fandom has wanted some clues, and now the showrunner has hinted about the stalker’s fate in the second season, quoting, “We know who it is; we can’t tease who it is,” Millar said. To this development, he also elaborated, “We certainly have big plans and lots more stories to tell in terms of Wednesday and her friends.” Gough said he can’t share whether viewers have already met the person who is the stalker. It will be exciting to see what the creators have in store for the fans to know about this potential stalker.
Until the truth about the stalker is fully exposed and resolved by the one and only Wednesday in the next episodes, the game of guessing and speculating will continue for the fandom.
Spoiler 3: Will there be more romance or not?
There’s still no clarity about this one, as the show creators and Jenna Ortega have stated two different approaches for Wednesday’s love angle in the series, which are as follows:
“I think there are some parts of him that he doesn’t know. And there’s definitely some primal attraction there and it’s just like, were those real feelings? We’re not convinced that even Tyler knows that at this point,” Millar added. Further stating that romance is not something Wednesday is looking for. “Maybe that’s why people are attracted to her — because she’s not interested,” he said. “She’s sort of amused like a scientist is amused, or fascinated by people’s attraction. She doesn’t quite understand it — ‘Why are people interested in me in this way?'”
Though, Jenna Ortega in an exclusive interview with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, stated that the second season of Wednesday is currently in the writing process, and she also mentioned that the writers and the complete team are currently working on the plot and other details. Talking about the same, the actress stated, “We wish to increase the horror element a little and then take Wednesday out of the romantic situation to let her be her own self.”
Similar views were expressed by Ortega in a recent episode of Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast. “I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down on a set in the way that I had to on ‘Wednesday’ because it’s so easy to fall into that category, especially with this type of show,” she said. She further adds, “Everything that she does, everything that I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all. Her being in a love triangle made no sense.”
After all these spoilers, the fans are hyped to know what will be covered in the new season, and the topic of the season’s potential return to Netflix is raging on social media once again! To clear up any more rumors, we speculate that the second season of “Wednesday,” will not be available on Netflix until 2023, and the fandom will have to wait a bit longer. The schedule for when the upcoming episodes will be filmed has not yet been made public. Additionally, Netflix hasn’t yet specified a premiere date.
But if we guess, we’ll have to wait until early to mid-2024 because it’s guessed that production will begin later this year. Hence, it is presumed to take at least another 12 to 14 months of filming and post-production, which puts the release of the second season somewhere next year, making it the ideal time frame to return to this world which is based on the character Wednesday Addams by Charles Addams.
In addition to this, Netflix also released a short clip in which Jenna Ortega, as Wednesday says, over a montage of season-one clips with some viral footage of fan events, quoting, “Over the past few weeks, I’ve been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet. It’s been pure torture. Thank you.” Take a look at the official post on Netflix’s Wednesday Twitter handle below:
