It looks like Yellowstone’s popular prequel series will take some time to make its official comeback! Continue reading to learn more about 1923 Season 2.
There is no doubt that as we approach the fall of 2023, fans are now wondering what the current status of the beloved drama series has been. For the last couple of days, fans have been speculating what’s in store for the Dutton family in 1923, during a time of various hardships, including Prohibition, drought, and the early stages of the Great Depression, which affected Montana long before the 1929 Stock Market Crash! The fandom is wondering when they will return to tackle a whole new wave of unexpected twists at every turn that promises to be an exhilarating ride!
To say the least, viewers will be curious to see how the story of these beloved characters and their journey will be continued for another season. So, if you are wondering what new developments have been happening so far behind the scenes, then we can assure you that you have reached the right place to know all your answers about the much-anticipated second season, which we definitely think is going to captivate the audience once again, as it has been doing since its inception last year! Here is everything we know so far about 1923 Season 2.
1923 Season 2 Release Date Updates: Has it been delayed?
We know that die-hard fans have been ecstatic ever since the series was renewed for a second season earlier this year, in February 2023! Even though this was great news, we want to shed some light on an unfortunate update: Sadly, the exact release date of the upcoming season hasn’t been confirmed. One of the main reasons for not disclosing such details early on is the fact that filming for the second season of the Yellowstone prequel, which was scheduled to start earlier this month in Montana, has now been “delayed indefinitely,” which has been majorly affected by the dual strikes.
According to NBC Montana, Butte Civic Center manager Bill Melvin said he was contacted by the production of the Paramount+ series that filming had been postponed as the WGA strike continued. Filming for the sophomore season of 1923 was due to start on Monday, June 5, 2023, and according to Melvin, production is paying $75,000 a month to use the Civic Center through the end of the year. This is quite disheartening news because the speculated release window will now be shifted further, as it will most likely happen sometime around 2024 because there is no chance it will return in 2023!
Moreover, we assume the series isn’t going to start production by October 2023, and it will eventually force the crew to reschedule the filming plans, which might be able to resume sometime later this year once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes conclude and the work on the scripts is back on track. In the end, it’s safe to say that the release of the last chapter will be delayed, and once the parties involved in the strikes reach an agreement, it’s only then the filming can officially commence, which tends to last for months before revealing the official release date.
As a result, until there is any confirmation, we will have to wait, hope for the best, and guess what will happen next! *Finger’s Crossed*

1923 Season 2 Plot: What to expect in the new season?
The Western drama series follows a generation of the Dutton family in 1923, during a time of various hardships, including Prohibition, drought, and the early stages of the Great Depression, which affected Montana long before the 1929 Stock Market Crash. The continuation of the plot from the prior season isn’t surprising, as 1923 Season 1 holds a 91% approval rating with an average rating of 7.0/10, based on 32 reviews by critics. On Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, the series has received a score of 67 out of 100 based on 15 critic reviews, indicating “generally favorable reviews.”
The official logline for the second season hasn’t been disclosed, but it is speculated to continue the plot from the final episode, “Nothing Left to Lose,” which was directed by Ben Richardson and written by Taylor Sheridan. The plot of the episode follows: After the priests do not return, Father Renaud and Marshall Kent search for Teonna. Runs His Horse and Pete Plenty Clouds find Teonna and take her with them. Creighton is released without bail. Zane’s wife, Alice, is arrested for miscegenation, and Zane is beaten by police. Meanwhile, Spencer and Alex board a liner to London. Alex’s former fiancé, Arthur, challenges Spencer to a duel, which Spencer wins.
However, Arthur attacks him, and Spencer kills him in self-defense. Although not charged, Spencer is removed from the vessel at the nearest port. Alex learns her parents have arranged for her to return to London and that she cannot leave the ship. Seeing Spencer be taken away, she declares she will find him in Bozeman, Montana. Back at the Dutton ranch, Whitfield arrives to announce that he has paid their property tax, and if they cannot pay him back by the end of the year, the deed for the land will default into his possession. Elizabeth suffers a miscarriage.
Moreover, Sheridan told Deadline that Season two is really “the second half” of season one and will wrap up the story. He explained, “This one is different from 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head. This one, I had no idea what I was going to do. I just went on a journey myself and I’m the one that made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got. Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks. An eight-episode block and a second eight-episode block to wrap this up. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice. For them, it is great because they get more content. For me, I get more runway.”
While you wait and speculate about what the new season has in store for the fans, we urge the readers to check out the official recap of the first season, which gives a brief insight into the prior episodes before streaming the new ones.
1923 Season 2 Cast: Who will reprise their roles?
Even though it is not confirmed which main cast members from the series are expected to reprise their roles in the new season, we speculate Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra, Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton, Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, Isabel May as the Narrator, Elsa Dutton, Brian Geraghty as Zane Davis, Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater, Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth “Liz” Strafford, and Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield will join the next season.
Moreover, the recurring cast members of the series who are speculated to reprise their roles are as follows: Robert Patrick as Sheriff William McDowell, Jennifer Ehle as Sister Mary, Sebastian Roché as Father Renaud, Marley Shelton as Emma Dutton, Leenah Robinson as Baapuxti, Caleb Martin as Dennis, Brian Konowal as Clyde/Clive, and Michael Greyeyes as Hank Plenty Clouds. The guest stars from the first season aren’t expected to return, as they were supposed to be an addition for the first season only. It might change if the creators want to incorporate those characters in the new season.
Until there is any confirmation, we’ll just have to wait and see what will be revealed in the coming weeks.

1923 Season 2 Frequently Asked Questions
Is it the last season?
The series was confirmed to run for two seasons, with eight episodes each, finishing off the saga with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Moreover, recently, Brandon Sklenar, who stars in the series as Spencer Dutton, told the Hollywood Reporter that the show would come to a definite conclusion at the end of season 2. “No, no, it’s bookend. [The series is] still limited, but I think of it as one piece—there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude,” he said.
How many episodes will be there?
For the second season of 1923, just like the first one, we speculated that the creators would include at least a total of eight episodes with an average runtime of 47–69 minutes. We would also like to highlight that right now, it is unknown whether the episodes will be split into two parts, as was done in the previous season. Such a strategy might help with filming and post-production, keeping with the standard broadcast television paradigm, which has been done for years.
Where to stream?
When 1923 Season 2 draws close to its release date, the series will be available exclusively on Paramount+, with other series of the same genre also accessible on the streaming platform with a range of membership options. It is an American subscription video-on-demand service owned by Paramount Global. You can watch thousands of episodes of your favorite shows on any device. Paramount+ includes on-demand and live content from CBS, BET, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon, among other services.
Is there any teaser or trailer?
Unfortunately, no official teaser of 1923 Season 2 has been released, and we do not expect to see one as the release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, and the filming status is neither here nor there, which makes it unreasonable to publish it this far ahead of schedule and give away major spoilers! In the meantime, check out the official trailer for the first season, which gives a brief insight into the prior episodes and paints the overall picture of the show.
