Former Haryana Chief Minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) supremo Om Prakash Chautala (86), who has been sentenced to ten years in the Junior Basic Trained Teacher (JBT) recruitment scam in Haryana, was formally released from Delhi’s Tihar Jail on Friday. Earlier, he was out of jail on parole. After his release from jail, he left for his residence in Gurugram. During this, the workers welcomed him.
What is JBT Teacher Recruitment Scam?
In 1999-2000, Haryana Government took out Junior Basic Training Teacher (JBT) jobs. Chautala was the Chief Minister at that time. A petition was filed in the Supreme Court regarding rigging in recruitment, after which its investigation was handed over to the CBI. The CBI found that people were given jobs by preparing fake lists instead of real ones. Fifty-five people were found guilty in the case. In 2013, Chautala and his son were sentenced to 10 years each.
Chautala got parole due to coronavirus epidemic
Chautala was released on parole on March 26, 2020, to decongest the jails due to the Corona pandemic. He was to surrender in jail again on February 21, 2021, but the High Court extended the parole period. So he was out of jail. After this, the government last month ordered the release of those who completed nine and a half years of the 10-year sentence.
Chautala released after completing paperwork in Tihar Jail.
Chautala was eligible for release as per the orders of the government. He had already completed his nine-and-a-half year sentence. In such a situation, on Friday, he was called to complete the paperwork for release. Chautala reached Tihar Jail in the morning, and after completing the paperwork, he was formally released from jail. After some time, he left for his residence in Gurugram along with his supporters.
After Chautala left for Gurugram from Tihar Jail, hundreds of activists garlanded flowers and raised slogans favouring at the Delhi-Gurugram border. After this, he left for his home with the convoy.
Regarding Chautala’s official release, Indian National Lok Dal state president Nafe Singh Rathi had said that after the release of Om Prakash Chautala, a new era would begin in Haryana’s politics. People from all sections of society are eagerly waiting for the release of the INLD supremo. He had said that Chautala had completed his sentence, and the remaining sentence has been waived off.
