Mirabai Chanu wins silver medal

Indian female lifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has created history. She has won a silver medal for India in the 49 kg weight category. This is the first medal for India in the Tokyo Olympics.

This is India’s second Olympic medal in weightlifting. Chanu has also set a new Olympic record by lifting 115 kg in clean and jerk. She lifted a total of 202 kg.

Chanu gave India its first medal of Tokyo Olympics

 

Chanu had consistently maintained herself in the medal race. After lifting 87 kg in snatch, she tried for 89 kg but could not succeed in lifting. Running second in the clean and jerk, she tried to lift 117 kg in exchange for China’s Zhihui’s 116 kg but failed to settle for a silver medal.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated Chanu

Chanu’s hopes of fetching an Olympic medal were high, and congratulations have been pouring in for her after she lived up to the expectations.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter, “Could not have asked for a happier start to Tokyo2020! India is elated by Mirabai Chanu’s stupendous performance. Congratulations to her for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting. Her success motivates every Indian.

Indian Railways on Saturday congratulated Saikhom Mirabai Chanu

“Living upto expectations & making everyone Proud! Congratulations to Ms Saikhom Mirabai Chanu for her splendid performance in #TokyoOlympics2020 and winning Silver for India. Railways weightlifter Ms Mirabai Chanu wins Silver. Entire Railway family is proud of Ms.Mirabai Chanu,” tweeted the Ministry of Railways on Saturday.

Manipur Chief Minister also expressed happiness

“What a day! What a win for India. Mirabai Chanu wins silver in Weightlifting Women’s 49kg category, India open tally in Tokyo Olympics. You’ve made the country proud today,” tweeted Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

Hou Zhihua of China won the gold

Hou Zhihui of China has captured the gold medal. She lifted 116 kg in clean and jerk and 210 kg in total. Zhihui not only won the gold medal but also set an Olympic record. She first set a record in the snatch by lifting a weight of 92 kg and then lifting 94 kg, improving his own record. Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah has won the bronze medal.
