Lalremsiami, a member of the Indian women’s hockey team that participated in the Tokyo Olympics, has been appointed as the head coach by the Mizoram Sports and Youth Services Ministry as a Group-A officer.
The women’s hockey team had excelled in the Olympics but missed out on a medal.
Lalremsiami, 21, is the first woman Olympian from Mizoram and was also the only player in her state at the Tokyo Games.
Lalremsiami to arrive in his state Mizoram on August 25
Lalremsiami will arrive in her state Mizoram on August 25. State Sports Director Lalsangliyana said a special program will be held at Vanapa Hall in his honor on August 26.
Lalremsiami is the first woman Olympian from Mizoram. The last Olympian archer from the state was C. Lalremsana, who represented the country at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
State government announces Rs 25 lakh to Lalremsiami
Earlier, he has also been allotted a plot of 691.85 sqm in Kolasib, the hometown of Lalremsiami. The state government had also announced a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh to him, out of which 10 lakh rupees have been given to his mother.
Women’s hockey team reaches semifinals for the first time
Indian women made it to the Olympic semi-finals for the first time, beating Australia 1-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals, Argentina lost to Great Britain in bronze medals and missed out on medals.
This is only the third Olympics for Indian women. After finishing fourth in the 1980 Olympics, the Indian women’s team played the Olympics directly in 2016 and finished 12th.
