Vishal Bhardwaj teams up with Netflix for spy thriller ‘Khufiya’

Netflix has announced a collaboration with filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj on an espionage thriller film named Khufiya.

Vishal Bhardwaj will produce and direct the film, which will star Tabu, Ali Fazal, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Ashish Vidyarthi.

According to Netflix, Khufiya is inspired by actual events and is based on Amar Bhushan’s classic spy thriller Escape to Nowhere.

My goal is to make an edgy spy film: Bhardwaj

The film tells the narrative of Krishna Mehra, an R&AW operator tasked to track down the mole selling India’s military secrets while struggling with her two identities like a spy and a lover.

“With Khufiya, my attempt is to create an edgy espionage film that contrasts the slow burn of intelligence & surveillance work with one’s deep-rooted emotional conflicts,” Bhardwaj explained.

Bhardwaj and Tabu have previously worked together on the films ‘Maqbool’ and ‘Haider’

Notably, Bhardwaj will collaborate on the script with Rohan Narula. It is also Tabu’s second production with Netflix, following the 2020 series A Suitable Boy, helmed by Mira Nair. The actor has collaborated with Bhardwaj on the critically acclaimed feature films Maqbool and Haider.

It’s like coming home: Tabu

“Khufiya is a one-of-a-kind project that is very close to my heart, and I am thrilled to be a part of this tense spy thriller. It’s always a pleasure to work with VB (Vishal Bhardwaj) again, and it feels like a homecoming “Tabu stated.

Pratiksha Rao, Netflix India’s head of Films and Licensing, stated that the business is thrilled to be working with Bhardwaj on Khufiya.

He has already indicated that ‘Kuttey’ will be produced

“His films are known to brilliantly showcase inherent conflicts between different characters and their worlds through moving stories, and we can’t wait for our members to experience this through the incredible story of Khufiya,” Rao added.

Notably, the famous filmmaker announced last month the development of the multi-starrer film Kuttey, which would mark his son Aasmaan Bhardwaj’s directorial debut in Bollywood.

Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series will produce ‘Kuttey’

Kuttey is a cape-thriller starring Arjun Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma, Naseeruddin Shah, Tabu, and Radhika Madan.

Kuttey will be presented by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series and produced in conjunction with Luv Ranjan, the famous filmmaker of Pyaar Ka Punchnama.

Notably, in 2018, Bhardwaj announced another Netflix series, Midnight’s Children, based on Salman Rushdie’s novel of the same name.
