The south Indian movie ‘Jai Bhim’ became the only Indian movie to dethrone Hollywood’s Shawshank Redemption from the top IMDb ranking. The film which has been directed by Gnanavel and produced by 2D Entertainment, got a rating of 9.6, helping it take the top position in IMDb ratings.
The coming of an Indian movie on top has bought happiness to the fans of Indian cinema. After the ‘Jai Bhim’ got 9.6 ratings helping it take the top position, Frank Darabont’s ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, was pushed to second spot with a rating of 9.3, while Francis Ford Coppola’s classic ‘The Godfather’ is in the third position with a rating of 9.2.

Jai Bhim is a Tamil drama movie written and directed by Tj Gnanavel and produced by Suriya and Jyotika under the banner of 2D Entertainment. The movie has Suriya play the character. Lijomol Jose plays Senggeni, a pregnant woman from a primitive rural tribe. K. Manikandan plays Rajakannu, Senggeni’s husband while Baby Joshika Maya plays Alli, Senggeni and Rajakannu’s daughter.
In the movie, Rajisha Vijayan plays Mythra, a teacher and renowned south actor Prakash Raj as Perumalsamy, an inspector general. Actor Rao Ramesh has played the role of S. Ram Mohan, an advocate general. These are some of the lead characters in the movie including many other small characters.

The movie is inspired by true events that happened in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu in the nineties, ‘Jai Bhim’ tells the moving story of an upright lawyer coming to the aid of poor, defenceless people from the Rural community. These are the people who have no means or resources to stand up to the cruelty and ill-treatment of the police force which is continuously exploiting the helplessness of these tribal people.

This is for the first time that an Indian movie has dethroned all top 10 movies of IMDB rating and come on the top of the table. The movies which have been beaten includes legendary movies like Steven Spielberg’s ‘Schindler’s List’, Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’, Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Pulp Fiction’ and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’.

How media rated and reviewed the movie?
One of the top Indian newspapers The Times of India gave the film 3.5 out of 5 the newspaper wrote that “Gnanavel gives us some terrific moments of defiance. Lijomol Jose is quietly powerful as Sengani, who gets a couple of arousing scenes when she turns down efforts at a compromise from cops. Manikandan, too, is effective and stands out in the scene when he urges his men to not give in as that will result in their community being branded as criminals. The director also portrays the intimacy between Sengani and Rajakannu in a charming manner”.
The top online portal Firstpost gave the film a 4 out of 5 ratings saying that “Jai Bhim is hard-hitting and intense. Unlike most commercial star vehicles, the film is decisively realistic. It tells a deeply important story with great nuance, ensuring that the people are not reduced to stereotypes”
