One of the most successful girl groups in K-pop, BLACKPINK has always set records with its music videos and song releases. Adding another feather to their cap this time, Kill this love has surpassed 1.5 Billion views on YouTube. This is the group’s second video to do so. Earlier their song Du-du-du has also crossed the same milestone making them the only girls group in K-pop to achieve so.

BLACKPINK is currently the first K-pop group to have over 1.5 billion views on several song videos.

After its release in April 2019, Kill This Love debuted at No. 41 on the Billboard 100 main singles chart, becoming the highest-charting song by a K-pop girl group.

BLACKPINK has risen to prominence in K-pop since its debut, earning the titles of “largest female group in the world,” “biggest K-pop girl band on the globe,” and “K-pop Queens.”  They were placed first on the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity 40 list in 2019, third in 2020, and second in 2021 in South Korea. Several foreign media publications, including Forbes, Billboard, and The Hollywood Reporter, have recognized the group’s success and significance to the global spread of the Korean wave.

BLACKPINK’s debut and global success

The group made their debut in August 2016 with the single album Square One, which included the singles Whistle and Boombayah, which went to number one on the Gaon Digital List in South Korea, and the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart in the United States, respectively.

BLACKPINK is the highest-charting female Korean band on the Billboard Hot 100, with Ice Cream (2020) hitting at number 13, and on the Billboard 200, with The Album (2020), which is also the first-ever album by a Korean girl group to sell more than one million copies.

They were the first Korean female group to join and top Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart, as well as the three times they topped the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. With their popular track Ddu-Du Ddu-Du, BLACKPINK became the first female Korean artist to gain a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. Their 2018 single Kiss and Make Up, a duet with Dua Lipa, was the first by a Korean group to obtain a British Phonographic Industry certification and an Australian Recording Industry Association platinum certification.

Throughout its history, BLACKPINK has set various internet records. Their music videos for Kill This Love (2019) and How You Like That (2020) both broke records for most views in the first 24 hours.

Three People’s Choice Awards, a Teen Choice Award, an MTV Video Music Award, nine Gaon Chart Music Awards, six Golden Disc Awards, five Melon Music Awards, eight Mnet Asian Music Awards, two Seoul Music Awards, and six Guinness World Records are among Blackpink’s many achievements.

An interesting fact is that BLACKPINK is the only K-pop group with no leader for the group.
