Expected Nominations

Belfast and The Power of the Dog are largely expected to compete for best film, with King Richard III, Dune, and West Side Story close behind. Meanwhile, the most likely nominees for best director are Jane Campion, Kenneth Branagh, Denis Villeneuve, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson.

Following her performance in the Princess Diana biopic Spencer, Kristen Stewart was widely considered to be the frontrunner for Best Actress, but a recent Golden Globes rejection has caused some to doubt her chances.

Nicole Kidman, who played Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin’s Being the Ricardos, is the current favorite, although Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter) and Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) are also in the running.

Denzel Washington (who played the titular thane in Joel Coen’s Macbeth), Andrew Garfield (for Netflix’s musical drama Tick, tick… Boom! ), Benedict Cumberbatch (for The Power of the Dog), and the bookies’ current favorite Will Smith (who played Serena and Venus Williams’ father in King Richard) are all likely nominees in the Best Actor category.

Who will host the Oscars this year?

Unlike the last three years, ABC has confirmed the presence of a host for this year’s award ceremony. As per Variety, Craig Erwich, President of Hulu Originals & ABC Entertainment, announced and praised Will Packer. “Will really has his pulse on popular culture and entertainment,” Erwich said. “I know he has a lot in store and we’ll have more details to share soon,” Erwich added.

While past hosts have included Jimmy Kimmel, Chris Rock, and Neil Patrick Harris, no one knows who will host this year’s event. Variety stated on January 21 that the ceremony will most likely have many hosts. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph are being considered as a trio, as are Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short, according to the publication.

The format and dress code of the ceremony is unknown yet. With the COVID-19, we are expected to see a red carpet event this year.
