Rescued by Ruby, a true story turned short story that is now being developed into a feature film starring The Flash actor Grant Gustin, is the latest example of Netflix’s commitment to bringing more real-life tales to our screens. The movie will be releasing on March 17, 2022, on Netflix worldwide, as per What’s on Netflix.
Katt Shea, a Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominee best known for her Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase and Poison Ivy films, will direct Rescued by Ruby, with Karen Janszen writing the script, which is based on two short tales by Squire Rushnell and Louise DuArt, who will also act as producers. Dan Angel of Fezziwig Studios will join them.
What is the backstory of Rescued by Ruby?
The film is based on the true story of Ruby, a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix, and Dan O’Neil, a K9 search and rescue team hopeful. The pup was judged unadoptable and due to be put down after several attempts to find her a home, when a volunteer trainer called Pat Inman believed the dog was bright behind all that belligerence and hoped that extra care and discipline might save her life.
Officer Dan O’Neil of the Rhode Island State Police took her in after she phoned them. It was Dan’s greatest opportunity at landing his ideal job. The youngster evolved into a faithful K-9 partner after a lot of patience and hard work.
Ruby discovered an injured missing youngster in the ravine on her sixth year on the unit, who turned out to be Pat’s son, the dog shelter volunteer who had saved his life.
The short tales based on it were titled Dogwink Ruby and Ruby: A Dogwink Story by Squire Rushnell and Louise DuArt.
What will the plot of Rescued by Ruby?
Rescued by Ruby’s official logline, which will adapt the two short stories, is as follows:
Ruby was a feisty young lady. Because of her usually “unmanageable” behavior, her previous owner submitted her to the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The adorable puppy was adopted and returned five times. For the border collie/Australian shepherd mix, things were looking bleak. Officer Daniel O’Neil was enamored with the 8-month-old dog just hours before he was scheduled to be killed. He saw her as a prospective canine cop and chose to follow his ambition of becoming one. Is this his new business partner? This is the genuine story of how two underdogs became champions.
In addition, as part of the presentation of their 2022 film schedule, Netflix released the following synopsis:
“State trooper Dan (Grant Gustin) aspires to join the K-9 Search and Rescue squad, but no one will let him.” Ruby, a shelter dog, wishes for a home but is running out of options. When fate pulls Dan and Ruby together, their unbreakable relationship aids them in facing their most difficult obstacle yet.”
