The Sea Beast is one of the biggest animated feature films set to debut on Netflix in 2022. This feel-good story of a sea monster hunter will take you on an exciting ride.
The project, as per Netflix Life, was first introduced in 2018 as Jacob and the Sea Beast, with the pitch at the time being “A charming seafarer travels into unexplored seas and encounters an unusual friend in a sea monster.”
However, since then it has undergone several changes. Here’s what we know so far about the animated film from Chris Williams.
Who is the mastermind behind The Sea Beast?
The Sea Beast is written, directed, and produced by Chris Williams.
Since the late 1990s, the prolific director has largely worked for Disney. Mulan was his debut production, and he worked as a narrative artist on it. Since then, he’s worked on some of Disney’s biggest blockbusters in various roles.
He most recently worked as a co-director on Moana and directed Big Hero 6 in 2014.
Back when the movie was announced Williams said in a statement that “Jacob and the Sea Beast’ is the kind of story I’ve always wanted to take on,” adding “It’s a tale of high adventure where our hero leaves the known world and ventures out into uncharted waters. As it turns out, I’m doing the same thing.”
Since then, Netflix has posted a video of Chris Williams on its animation studio’s homepage, NetflixAnimation.com, in which he discusses why he chose Netflix and his background in animation.

He claims in the video that he switched to Netflix because “it’s a place where people are getting to do the thing that they always wanted to make but never imagined they’d get to make.”
In recent years, Netflix has been able to entice a number of creatives away from Disney. Williams is one of them. Ronnie Del Carmen (Inside Out), Nancy Kanter (Sofia the First), Kenny Ortega (High School Musical), Darla K. Anderson (Coco), Chris Nee (Doc McStuffins), Shion Takeuchi (Gravity Falls), and Alex Hirsch are among those who have switched to Netflix (Gravity Falls).
Jed Schlanger, a producer on the movie, has previously worked on Dreamworks films such as How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and The Boss Baby.
Melissa Cobb, the Vice President of Netflix’s Kids and Family Entertainment, is mentioned as a producer, along with Christian Hejnal (Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse), who is listed as an associate producer, on IMDb.
The Sea Beast on Netflix: A First Look
Netflix provided us our first glimpse at the film with four seconds of video and a first peek picture as part of their partial announcement of their 2022 schedule.
The tease can be seen between 2:05 and 2:09 in Netflix’s movie teaser video, which has over 6.5 million views as of February 7, 2022.
Who is in the cast of The Sea Beast’s voice actors?
Netflix is yet to reveal any of the voice cast members for The Sea Beast as of February 2022.
When is The Sea Beast going to be available on Netflix?
So yet, only the year 2022 has been verified. It’s hard to predict anything beyond that broad rollout right now.
Some of the most popular animated series, such as Back to the Outback in 2021, were introduced to Netflix in December, while The Mitchells vs. The Machines was added in April, so it’s truly anyone’s guess.
