“You keep pushing it off and say you’ll do it but u never do. It’s always gonna be that way if u don’t take action,” this is a text from Michelle Carter, 17, to her 18-year old boyfriend Conrad Roy III who killed himself with carbon monoxide fumes in his truck at a K-Mart parking lot in Massachusetts, 2014.
She later faced a highly publicized and scrutinized homicide trial in 2017, with prosecutors claiming that her calls and messages caused Roy to commit suicide.
Hulu’s The Girl From Plainville tells the chilling true story of this trial, based on the Esquire feature of the same name by Jesse Barron.
Here’s what we know about The Girl From Plainville on Hulu:
When is The Girl From Plainville coming out?
The first three episodes of the eight-episode Hulu series The Girl From Plainville are set for release on March 29, 2022. After that, the remaining episodes will premiere weekly on the platform.
The Girl From Plainville Plot: What is The Girl From Plainville about? Who is Michelle Carter?
Co-written by Liz Hannah (The Post) and Patrick Macmanus (Dr Death), The Girl From Plainville is based on the 2017 Esquire story of the same title by Jesse Jaron. Elle Fanning stars as Michelle Carter, who served 11 months of a 15-month sentence for the involuntary manslaughter of her boyfriend.
On July 13, 2014, Conrad Roy III was found dead by suicide in his pickup truck parked outside a Kmart in Massachusetts. It was later revealed that Roy’s girlfriend, Carter, had allegedly sent dozens of text messages urging him to kill himself and giving step-by-step instructions on how to do it. Roy and Carter had been in a relationship since 2012 after meeting in Florida.
According to People, the judge who announced her conviction, Judge Moniz, explained what ultimately led to her conviction: “Carter’s actions and also her failure to act where she had a self-created duty to Mr. Roy since she had put him in that toxic environment, constituted each and all wanton and reckless conduct,” he said.
“She [instructed] Mr. Roy to get back into the truck, well-knowing of all of the feelings that he [had] exchanged with her: his ambiguities, his fears, his concerns,” he added.
“She did nothing. She did not call the police or Mr. Roy’s family. Finally, she did not issue a simple additional instruction [to Roy]: ‘Get out of the truck.’ ”
Carter confessed to a friend that she killed Roy by texting him after his body was discovered. She wrote, “I could have stopped it,” according to People. “I was on the phone with him and he got out of the car because it was working and he got scared and I [expletive] told him to get back in.”
For her role in Roy’s death, Carter was sentenced to 15 months in prison and later released from prison early for being a ‘model inmate.’
The official synopsis reads as follows:
