Who doesn’t like a good romantic comedy? Romantic comedy is a massive genre to explore, be it animated or live action form of entertainment. Rom-com anime are the perfect blend of romantic drama and comedy situations and some of them are all fun and games. There are similar themes in most of them like enemies to lovers, poor girl rich boy, love at first sight, opposites attract and a few more, mostly based in high school. That said, they still manage to grab eyeballs and keep the audience hooked throughout unless some of them turn out to be a complete dud.
For now let’s dig in the genre to find the best rom-coms available based on their hilarious situations, swoon-worthy chemistry, and abundant romance.
Ore Monogatari (My Love Story)
The story revolves around a high school freshman, Takeo Gouda, who is built massive and super masculine. The boys of the class admire him for his masculinity but girls are nowhere into him. So how will he find love? Especially when his best friend is the most handsome boy of school and every girl including Takeo’s crushes, would always want him. However, one day he saves a girl named Rinko Yamato from getting harassed and there starts a relationship of admiration and giddiness. The main positive of the story is that the main guy isn’t a ‘Greek-god’ kind handsome, instead a big, awkward, yet a super sweet person.
My Little Monster
Shizuku Mizutani is an intelligent and studious girl who prioritizes getting good grades over making and friends and fun overall. On the other hand, Haru Yoshida is a problem child. The two interacted first when Shizuku goes to deliver an assignment to Haru’s residence. Both are very much alike in terms of having friends and social interactions. What they got to do is to figure out themselves as people and ways to go through the high school together.
Misaki Ayuzawa is a the female student council president of a former boys school, which is now operating co-ed. Everyone respects her authority even though male students think of her as a strict disciplinarian. One day, Takumi Usui, the most good looking guy at school uncovers that Misa works at a maid café in order to support her family and teases her for it. The developing relationship between Misaki and Takumi is fun to watch while they try to be at each other’s back and at the same time try not to fall in love. This anime does an impressive job in showing a strong minded feminist girl who sets her own boundaries and understands what she wants.
Ojisan to Marshmallow
Iori Wakabayashi and Habahiro Hige are co-workers and Wakabayashi is very attracted to Hige just like any other office romance. However, what people fail to accept is how can a 24 year old woman get attracted towards Hige, an overweight middle aged man. Hige is a super sweet and naïve person who never understands her feelings no matter how much she tries to lure him close to her with Marshmallows. Marshmallows! Why? Oh because Hige loves Marshmallows. The factor of interest in this anime is that Hige is nowhere around a traditional good looking anime protagonist but still Wakabayashi is head over heels for him.
Kamisama Kiss is a perfect show for people who want their rom-com with some supernatural on top. The anime centers around Nanami Momozono, a homeless girl who is tricked by a god in taking his responsibilities where she meets Tomoe, a fox demon. The initial unacceptance of each other and bickering is something cute and adorable but they have to deal with the feelings that have started showing up between them.
