When we think of period dramas, we get a picture of elaborated dress gowns and hats, horse carriages, balls, like Downtown Abbey or Bridgerton. But it is a wide genre and anything historic can fit into it. And Netflix never stays behind in giving us as many options as possible. It already has a huge collection of period dramas and more are on the way. Here’s the list of period drama movies coming soon to Netflix:
Starring Ana de Armas, Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale and Julianne Nicholson, Blonde is an American biographical movie. Not sticking to the facts, the film is a fictionalized take on the life of actress Marilyn Monroe and her rise in the decades of 40s and 50s, also chronicled in a novel by Joyce Carol Oates. The development started back in 2010 but numerous factors led to the delay and the production began in LA in August 2019. Netflix has announced its release in mid 2022.
Netflix’s Rustin is another upcoming American biography which tells the tale of Bayard Rustin, the late civil rights activist who is best known for his 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which became the ground for Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous speech, ‘I Have A Dream’. It is being produced by Higher Ground Production, started by Barack and Michelle Obama directed by George C. Wolfe. The roles of Bayard Rustin and Dr. Martin Luther King have been bagged by Colman Domingo and Aml Ameen respectively. There is no news of a confirmed release date but it will be on screen sometime in 2022.
Operation Mincement is a big budget war thriller adapted from the book of the same name by author and historian Ben Macintyre. Operation Mincemeat was a military deception operation carries out by Allied Forces during World War II. Its aim was to transfer Axis troops to Greece by faking an attack on Greece whereas the main target was actually Sicily’s liberation. The mission was successful as Hitler’s fell right into the trap and moved his troops to Greece and didn’t leave enough manpower to defend Sicily. Starring Colin Firth, Jason Isaacs, Kelly Mcdonald and Matthew McFayden, it is being produced by See-Saw Films and Cohen Media Group. It will be released on Netflix on May 11, 2022.
Written and directed by Peter Landesman, The Council is an upcoming Netflix Original biopic-crime drama that chronicles the life of Nicky Barnes, the founder of a crime syndicate and one of the most infamous crime bosses of Harlem in the 1970s. Will Smith will be the one playing Nicky or Mr. Untouchable, dubbed by New York Times.
Enola Holmes 2
Netflix has announced the wrapping up of Enola Holmes 2 filming. Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, and Louis Patridge will be reprising their roles as Enola, Sherlock and Tewkesbury respectively. Enola Holmes is a story of the brilliant younger sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes with an eye for details and wit almost equal to her detective brother. In the prequel she embarks on a perilous journey when one morning she wakes up and doesn’t find her mother around. There were no cliffhangers at the end of the first movie so nobody knows what to expect from the upcoming movie, however, when there is Holmes family involved then it’s going to be all about clues, investigation, and a lot of thrill.
