Honoring women who have made marvelous contribution to the music industry is something Billboard has been trying to do since 2007. The Billboard Women in Music awards cater to those who have been phenomenal with their music in the industry. Billboard announced on Monday that it will stream its 2022 Women in Music Awards entirely over Twitter.
For the first time in two years, the event will be held in person after being virtual due to the epidemic. On March 2, 2022, the awards event will be held at the YouTube Theater in Hollywood Park in Los Angeles.
Live red carpet footage, backstage highlights, significant in-show events, and exclusive acceptance speeches and performances by the awardees will all be included in the livestream. In addition, leading up to the ceremony, Billboard will publish exclusive Twitter Spaces chats with Christina Aguilera and select award recipients.
Woman of the Year Olivia Rodrigo, Icon Award winner Bonnie Raitt, and Executive of the Year Golnar Khosrowshahi are among the awardees this year. Gabby Barrett, Phoebe Bridgers, Doja Cat, Karol G, Saweetie, and Summer Walker are among the other awardees and performers. Additional acts and presenters will be revealed soon, according to Billboard.
This agreement builds on Twitter’s and Billboard’s previous collaborations, which included live-streaming Billboard’s Grammy coverage and a real-time, official Billboard chart called Billboard Hot Trending Songs powered by Twitter.
Billboard president Julian Holguin said the livestream will feature “can’t-miss” moments. “This partnership allows us to reach beyond the walls of the event venue and honor the powerful women driving the music industry and shaping pop culture amongst a global audience,” Holguin added. He also stated “We’re thrilled to continue our close relationship with Twitter to livestream Billboard’s first in-person Women in Music Awards in over two years. We look forward to building a unique and organic streaming experience with Twitter and ultimately bringing all of the can’t-miss moments from Women in Music to passionate fans everywhere. This partnership allows us to reach beyond the walls of the event venue and honor the powerful women driving the music industry and shaping pop culture among a global audience.”
Sarah Rosen, head of U.S. entertainment and news partnerships stated at Twitter: “Streaming this year’s Women in Music Awards is the perfect way to honor and amplify the female artists that fans talk about every day on Twitter.”
Fans will be able to attend the Billboard Women in Music Awards for the first time. Billboardwomeninmusic.com has more information and tickets available.
In the meanwhile, Twitter and Billboard have teamed together in commemoration of Black History Month. Throughout February, #BillboardNews will post new videos on Twitter celebrating the accomplishments of Black musicians and music executives on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Drake, Aretha Franklin, Berry Gordy, and Rihanna have all been included in recent episodes.
Background of the show
Billboard Women in Music is a yearly event hosted by the magazine Billboard. According to the magazine, its main award is the Woman of the Year, which was created to honor “women in the music industry who have made significant contributions to the business and who, through their work and continued success, inspire generations of women to take on increasing responsibilities within the field.” With three prizes, Taylor Swift is the highest rewarded lady at the event (two Woman of the Year awards and the Woman of the Decade award).
