The love story is never the whole story

This Valentine’s Day, people are celebrating love all over the world, but 20th Century Studio’s Deep Water trailer has its very own anti-valentine message with the tagline, “The love story is never the whole story.” However, the Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas starrer movie look steamier than ever in its brand new trailer. Taking a page from David Finch’s Gone Girl, Affleck is once again portraying a brooding bad-boy in the movie, with Hollywood’s latest obsession, Ana De Armas, playing his wife. Despite its release date being far in the future, Deep Water had earlier made headlines due to the on-set romance between Affleck and De Armas. Though they eventually broke up, the audience is eagerly anticipating the steamy romance between the two ex-lovers.

Deep Water, based on Patricia Highsmith’s acclaimed novel of the same name, is being adapted, originally, for the big screen by filmmaker Adrian Lyne. With films like Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal, Lyne has become synonymous with the erotic genre. The script is penned by Euphoria’s creator-writer, Sam Levinson, along with Zach Helm.

The highly anticipated project, which has been in development since 2013, was slated to hit theaters in 2020. Since it was one of the many casualties of the pandemic, it was pulled from theaters’ schedules and is now set to premiere on Hulu on March 18, 2022.

Deep Water Movie plot: What’s it about?

W. W. Norton & Company

The Patricia Highsmith psychological thriller book, which the movie is based on, was originally published in 1957. No one writes psychological thrillers like Highsmith. She is the godmother of that genre, and Gillian Flynn, the author of Gone Girl, obviously admires her work. When she hosted The Wall Street Journal’s Book Club, where prominent authors are invited to analyze their favorite books, she famously chose Highsmith’s Deep Water. Highsmith’s other book-movie adaptations include Strangers on a TrainThe Talented Mr. Ripley and Carol.

The story follows suburban couple Vic and Melinda Van Allen who find themselves in a broken and loveless marriage. Vic allows Melinda to have extramarital affairs with anyone she wants and whenever she wants as long as she does not leave their family so that he can avoid a messy divorce. This arrangement becomes complicated when he begins to feel jealous and, in an attempt to win her back through dangerous mind games, one of her lovers is found dead, with Vic as the prime suspect.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas star as Vic and Melinda Van Allen, an affluent New Orleans couple whose marriage is crumbling under the weight of resentment, jealousy, and mistrust. As their mutual provocations and mind games escalate, things quickly turn into a deadly game of cat and mouse as Melinda’s extramarital dalliances start going missing.”

Deep Water Cast: Who’s in it?

Along with Affleck and de Armas, Deep Water has a dashing cast, including Euphoria’s own ‘Nate Jacobs’ Jacob Elordi. Other cast members are Tracy Letts, Lil Rel Howery, Dash Mihok, Finn Wittrock, Kristen Connolly, Rachel Blanchard, Michael Braun, Jade Fernandez, Grace Jenkins, Brendan C. Miller, Devyn Tyler, and Jeff Pope.

Deep Water Trailer & First Look:

The brand new poster and teaser trailer were released on Monday. After this sneak peek into the upcoming movie, the chemistry and steamy scenes between Affleck and De Armas are the talks of the town. De Armas, who plays the role of Melinda, can be seen asking, “Do you love me?” “Of course,” Affleck’s Vic replies. “There’s something wrong with me,” she warns. “There’s something wrong with me too,” he affirms. The teaser itself warns that this is not a love story, and even if it is, it isn’t the whole story.
