2022 seems to be a happy year for the K-pop fans. If the news of several K-pop artists making their super strong comebacks wasn’t enough, Super Junior has hopped on to the trend and has officially announced that they would be making their comeback as a group with a brand-new special single album.
On February 14, Super Junior released a teaser image via their official social media accounts, announcing the release of a special single album. Siwon, Leeteuk, Ryeowook, Donghae, Heechul, Yesung, Kyuhyun, Eunhyuk, and Shindong are shown in pastel tones in the spoiler image.
We haven’t seen all of the active members of the legendary boy band in a long time. They are one of the few second-generation bands who have remained active and popular worldwide after their debut in 2005. While we are currently down to nine active members, fans are always excited to see the entire group reunite. The Renaissance, their tenth studio album, was their most recent OT9 release. It reached the top of multiple charts, including Gaon and iTunes, and Billboard Japan.
For the unversed, Super Junior, usually known as SJ or SuJu, is a South Korean boy band under SM Entertainment. The group made its debut with the single Twins in November of 2005. Due to their significant contributions to Korean wave, they have also been dubbed the “King of Hallyu Wave” by the media. Super Junior currently consists of 10 members – leader Leeteuk, Heechul, Yesung, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook, and Kyuhyun.
Following the release of their best-selling single Sorry, Sorry in 2009, the title song of their most critically acclaimed album, Sorry, Sorry, Super Junior gained international recognition. They’ve been divided into smaller sub-groups over time, focusing on diverse music genres and audiences at the same time. Individually, the members have dabbled in hosting, presenting, and acting. Other Korean talent management has begun teaching their music groups in other parts of the entertainment industry as a result of Suju’s success and appeal as all-around entertainers.
Super Junior were ambassadors to many bodies. They were selected to become the ambassador of Ansan city in 2007, and Gangnam District in 2012. They were also appointed as the goodwill ambassadors for the 2008 Korea and Thailand 50th Anniversary, honoring the good relationship between the two countries. In February 2010, Super Junior was named as Taiwan’s tourism ambassador, and as the ambassador for Korean tourism by Korea Tourism Organization in July 2011.
Another high of Super Junior’s career was they retained their best-selling K-pop artist spot for four years in a row. Not only this, the group has won thirteen Mnet Asian Music Awards and nineteen Golden Disc Awards and is the second singing group to win Favorite Artist Korea at the 2008 MTV Asia Awards. If this wasn’t enough, they were nominated for the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2012 for Best Asian Act. At the 2015 Teen Choice Awards, they took both the International Artist and Best Fandom awards.
Super Junior’s success spree continued, and in March 2020, they broke their own record topping the Korean Album Chart of Taiwan’s KKBOX for 122 consecutive weeks since 2017 with their 8th album Play, the 8th album repackages REPLAY in 2018, the 9th album Time Slip from 2019, and 9th album repackage Timelessly.
When member Donghae revealed that he had undergone surgery and was healing, fans were concerned. However, it appears that all nine active members will be involved in the album’s upcoming release. Super Junior teased a promo shot of all nine members on their Instagram story as a Valentine’s Day gift for the fans, captioning it, “Super Junior Special Single Album Coming Soon.” While confetti falls around them, the K-pop group wears pastel colors. Fans are wondering if the title song will be a ballad because props are covered in a large sheet with the slogan “Sadness is nothing.”
Over 12 years and still going strong, fans can’t wait to see the magic SuJu brings back with this release.
