Taika Waititi never disappoints his audience. You’d be living in a hole if you haven’t heard the name Taika Waititi. Waititi’s latest TV project, a pirate comedy, Our Flag Means Death, starring Rhys Darby as “gentleman pirate” Stede Bonnet, and Waititi himself, released its brand new trailer, and we can’t contain our excitement! Announced earlier this year, Our Flag Means Death will reunite What We Do in the Shadows co-stars Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby.
Waititi and Darby will act together in the six-episode television show, with Waititi also executive producing. Waititi, who won the adapted screenplay Oscar at the 2020 Academy Awards for Jojo Rabbit, is also directing the pilot episode. The plot follows Stede Bonnet as he goes from living an aristocratic life to becoming the captain of the pirate ship Revenge after a midlife crisis in 1717.

A total of ten episodes of Our Flag Means Death will be aired on HBO Max; the first three will arrive on March 3, followed by three more on March 10, then two each on March 17 and 24.

Our Flag Means Death Plot: What’s it about?
After leaving behind an aristocratic lifestyle, Stede Bonnet is on a crazy journey to become a full-fledged pirate. During this time, he befriends the infamous captain, Blackbeard. Based loosely on Stede Bonnet’s adventures at sea, the show will also explore the alliance between Bonnet and Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard.

The unique new comedy is loosely based on the true adventures of 18th-century would-be pirate, Stede Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby. After trading in his comfortable life for one of a buccaneer, Stede becomes captain of a pirate ship but struggles to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew. Bonnet Stede’s fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard, played by Taika Waititi.
