Creating a whole semi-universe with an existing character is always a tricky challenge. But Matt Reeves has decided to jump into the mini-verse creation with the upcoming The Batman Movie.
The upcoming picture The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, Matt Reeves has outlined his ideas to establish the Batverse which will be the semi-universe of the character within the existing DC universe itself.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker revealed the news and emphasized how The Batman is a different creature from the DCEU.
“What I really wanted this movie to do was create a Batverse. You don’t do a story and go, this is Chapter 1 because you might not get to do Chapter 2,” he said.
“So, the story had to stand on its own. But the thing about it is that the Bat world is so rich with characters that as you’re starting to come to an end, you can already start thinking about the next thing.”
“Because the idea, of course, is that Gotham’s story never ends,” added Reeves.
The filmmaker of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is already developing two spin-offs with HBO Max, both of which will be set in the same world. Both were revealed in July 2020, one is a series about the Penguin’s ascent to power and the other is a drama about the Gotham City Police Department.
The Batman is a new American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It is a reboot of the Batman film franchise, produced by DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Matt Reeves directed the picture, and he co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig. Along with Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell, it stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film follows Batman as he uncovers corruption in Gotham City while chasing down the Riddler (Dano), a serial murderer who preys on the city’s wealthy.
During Batman’s second year of crime-fighting, he chases the Riddler, a serial assassin who preys on Gotham’s upper crust. During the inquiry, he finds corruption that has ties to his own family, and he is forced to form new alliances in order to apprehend the Riddler and put the guilty to jail.
