STAYC is the acronym for Star to a Young Culture. It is a South Korean girl group formed by High Up Entertainment. The group is composed of six members: Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon, and J. They debuted on November 12, 2020, with the release of their debut single album Star to a Young Culture.
STAYC debuted with the lead single So Bad produced by Black Eyed Pilseung (BEP). BEP has produced some of the iconic K-pop songs in history like TT, Roller Coaster, Touch My Body and Fancy. The producing duo described the STAYC’s sound as “teen fresh”, highlighting the group’s “unique individual vocal colors”. Prior to the album’s release, promotions were done through 1theK’s YouTube channel. These featured dance covers of BLACKPINK, BTS, and Stray Kids that earned over 1 million views, as well as a vocal cover of TWICE and Red Velvet songs that received over 2 million views.
On April 8, 2021, the group released their second single album Staydom, which included the lead hit ASAP. The song is charted on Billboard’s weekly K-pop 100 chart. In its first month, Staydom sold 56,198 copies.
Stereotype, the group’s first extended play, and its lead single of the same name were released on September 6, 2021. In just 21 days, the music video received 30 million views. In its first week, the album sold more than 114,000 copies. With an overall score of 8,760 points, the group got their first music show trophy on SBS MTV’s The Show on September 14.
STAYC has already released the concept photos for their upcoming album.
STAYC has also recently released the YOUNG-LUV.COM highlight medley. The medley gives listeners their first taste of the new album’s six tracks. The tracks include the title song RUN2U, followed by b-sides SAME SAME, 247, YOUNG LUV, BUTTERFLY, and I WANT YOU BABY.
The group has also launched a countdown website for the upcoming record, which currently features a heart-shaped lock as well as a link to the newly-released clip.
STAYC was recognized as one of NME’s 100 Emerging Artists of 2022, where they were hailed for their “sheer pop optimism” and “distinctive sound.” Closer to home, the girl group won a trophy for Best Performance at the 31st Seoul Music Awards, as well as a Digital Song Bonsang at the 36th Golden Disc Awards for their song ASAP.
