HBO’s TV adaptation of Naughty Dog’s classic The Last of Us is finally happening. The HBO adaptation of one of the most celebrated video game franchises is something gamers have been looking forward to. The plot of The Last of Us is beloved in the gaming world and appreciated for its live-action and compelling storylines.
The upcoming live-action film, which was officially announced in 2020, will feature some talent from the video game franchise. The series creator, Neil Druckmann (The Last of Us and Uncharted video game franchises), is working as both a writer and executive producer alongside Craig Mazin (Chernobyl). The show is being produced by PlayStation Productions and Naughty Dog for HBO. Included in the lineup are Carolyn Strauss (Chernobyl), and Evan Wells (Naughty Dog). Also joining the production from Playstation are Asad Qizlibash and Carter Swan.

What is the release date for The Last of Us?
There is no official release date so far. The show was expected to premiere in late 2022. But on February 16, 2022, HBO Programming Chief Casey Bloys revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the HBO adaptation will not premiere this year. “The Last Of Us is shooting right now in Canada. We haven’t announced an air date yet. But it’s not 2022. They’re still shooting in Calgary,” he said.

The Last of Us Cast: Who’s in it?
Bella Ramsey, who portrayed Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, will play Ellie. Pedro Pascal, a fellow Game of Thrones actor, is playing Joel.

Merle Dandridge will reprise her role as Marlene from the video game, and Gabriel Luna will play Tommy, Joel’s younger brother. Sarah, Joel’s daughter, has also been cast, and she will be played by Nico Parker, a newcomer.
In December 2021, Nick Offerman of Parks and Recreation was confirmed to play Bill, a post-pandemic survivalist living alone in an isolated town. He was brought in to fill the role of actor Con O’Neill, who had to leave the show owing to schedule issues.

The Last of Us: What’s it about?
The HBO adaptation is set to follow the events after the video game of 2013. Joel is charged with smuggling Ellie, a fourteen-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone two decades after modern civilization collapsed. In a hostile, post-pandemic world, Joel and Ellie, brought together by desperate circumstances, must rely on each other to survive a brutal journey across what remains of the United States.
The official synopsis has been officially revealed by HBO: “The story takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”
