A new cast announcement revealed David Dastmalchian to join Nolan’s Oppenheimer which already has a star-studded cast. Dastmalchian got his big break fifteen years ago in The Dark Knight by Nolan himself. Now the duo is reuniting after a decade and a half.
Back in 2007, Dastmalchian was working as a telemarketer and a theatre actor, when he auditioned for The Dark Knight as one of the men in the bank heist scene. Even though he didn’t get that part, he got called to play one of Joker’s henchmen. The role gave him the chance to work opposite the elites of cinema like Heath Ledger, Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart.
After that, Dastmalchian has landed many impressive roles and has made sure that he nails them all. He’s been a part of multiple superhero movies after The Dark Knight. He appeared as Kurt in both of Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man films, Abra Kadabra in the CW’s The Flash, Abner Krill / Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad (2021). Recently, Dastmalchian has joined the cast of 20th Century’s Stephen King adaptation Boogeyman and has wrapped production on Boston Strangler. He’ll also be seen in the Dracula flick The Last Voyage of the Demeter which wrapped filming back in October 2021.
Another cast announcement was made just a few days ago where Kenneth Branagh, Alden Ehrenreich and David Krumholtz were the additions to already-stacked cast list, which includes Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Mathew Modine, Dane DeHaan, and Jack Quaid.
What is Oppenheimer all about and who is playing what?
Oppenheimer is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Martin Sherwin and Kai Bird. Oppenheimer was a scientist who led The Manhattan Project— which led to the development of the atomic bomb for the United States of America in World War II. He later served as the chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Cillian Murphy is all set to play the lead.
Emily Blunt will be starring alongside Murphy as Katherine Oppenheimer. She was a scientist as well and ended up connecting Oppenheimer to communism which eventually led to his exile from the government service.
Robert Downey Jr. took up the role of Lewis Strauss. Strauss was an American philanthropist and a naval officer who served as chairman for the United States Atomic Energy Commission just like Oppenheimer. The pair had clashing opinions on the hydrogen bomb development in the 40s.
Matt Damon has bagged the role of Lieutenant General Leslie Groves. Groves was a United States Army Corps of Engineers officer who played a pivotal role in the construction of the Pentagon. He was the military director of the Manhattan Project.
Florence Pugh will be playing Jean Frances Tatlock. She was a member of the Communist Party of the United States of America and also known for her on-and-off affair with Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer will hit theaters on July 21, 2023. The extensive casting procedure doesn’t seem to be ending even though the production has started. We can expect more information to surface in the coming days, taking into account the frequency of recent announcements.
