We’d like to talk about that grey area between romantic comedies and stressful thrillers, which is fun-crime-murder-comedy-thrillers. What would you watch when you are caught in the middle of not wanting to watch cheesy rom-coms but also do not want to exhaust all your energy watching a gripping murder mystery where serial killers scare the hell out of you? When you combine both of these, you have comedy-thriller movies, our favorite genre!
In these movies, everything seems perfect and organized at first, and then suddenly it all becomes chaotic! A boyfriend could turn out to be a spy, a girl’s night could turn into a murder-night, a vacation could turn into a murder-cation, anything can happen in these movies. Without wasting further time, let’s get into it.
Here are some fun movies that have murders, crimes, spies, and a whole lot of laughter, love and adventure!
Rough Night (2017)
Whenever Kate McKinnon stars as one of the leads, you can expect a laugh-out-loud comedy. A reputed politician in the making, Jess (Scarlett Johansson) goes with her best friends for a girls’ trip ahead of her marriage, yes, a bachelorette trip to Miami. Everything goes haywire when a male stripper gets (accidentally) killed at their Miami beach house. The girls then try hard to cover it up, but then the whole situation goes out of control even more. The movie features Scarlett Johansson, Jillian Bellm, Kate McKinnon, Ilana Glazer, Zoë Kravitz in the lead. The supporting cast includes Ty Burrel and Demi Moore.
Game Night (2018)
Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the movie turns a fun game night into an actual murder mystery. Max and Annie’s weekly game night gets an upgrade by Max’s brother with a fake murder mystery plan that even includes fake thugs and fake cops. But things get real when Brooks gets kidnapped by burglars. If we reveal more, it will spoil the story! The movie stars Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman in the lead.
Murder Mystery (2019)
Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler are our favorite duo, and this Netflix movie was an instant hit. Jennifer Aniston’s Audrey is a hairdresser in New York, and she is married to Adam Sandler’s Nick Splitz. On their 15th marriage anniversary, Audrey confronts and complains about the promise he had given to Audrey at the time of their wedding, which was a trip to Europe. Nick pretends he has in fact booked a trip, and they set off to Europe, where they somehow land on a billionaire’s yacht. When they are caught up in the murder investigation of the same billionaire on the yacht, everything turns chaotic.
A Simple Favor (2018)
This is the story of Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) and Emily (Blake Lively). A single mother, Stephanie leads a normal life with her son in Connecticut. She is also an active vlogger with her own website and pretty good followers. As for Emily, a happily married mom of one son, in contrast, she leads a glamorous life with her career in PR. She is somewhat the talk of the town with her personal style, fashion, and unconventional lifestyle. The worlds of Stephanie and Emily collide, which seems perfect at first as they instantly kick off a good friendship. But one day, Emily asks for one simple favor from Stephanie, which is to babysit her son for an evening, and that’s it! Emily disappears! Stephanie further digs into Emily’s past and discovers some interesting things.
The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018)
What would you do if you learned that the ex who just dumped you with a text turned out to be an international spy? Directed by Susanna Fogel, the Mila Kunis-Kate McKinnon movie follows two best friends, Audrey and Morgan. Audrey (Mila Kunis) gets dumped by her boyfriend, Drew (Justin Theroux). She finds out of nowhere that Drew is a CIA agent and that he is currently being chased down by armed men in Vilnius. He calls Audrey and asks for his belongings in her home, which includes a valuable fantasy football trophy. Audrey and Morgan are then dragged into a thriller comic adventure with armed men, CIA agents, and assassins. The movie also features Gillian Anderson.
