In a recent profile for Vogue, Margot discussed the unexpected aspects of a Barbie film directed by Greta. “But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it,” Robbie says. “People generally hear Barbie and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”
With two academy nominated directorial credits and an impressive acting career behind her, Greta celebrates females and feminism in her films. In 2019, Greta wrote and directed Little Women, an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic of the same title, starring Florence Pugh, Laura Dern, Timothee Chalamet, Emma Watson, and Ronan. She made a radical change in the ending of a classic like Little Women.
In an interview with OprahMag, she said, “I wanted to give Louisa May Alcott an ending she might have liked.” Greta received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Little Women, along with six other Oscar nominations for the film. Hence, Mattel’s Barbie in the hands of Greta can’t be the obvious Barbie origin story or her love story with Ken.
